Nigerian media personality and entrepreneur Toke Makinwa has shared an emotional message to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, describing the moment as especially meaningful as she celebrates it for the first time as a mother to a baby girl.

Taking to Instagram, the former on-air personality expressed gratitude for the milestone while also revealing that the day held double joy for her family. According to her, the occasion coincided with her daughter reaching a new milestone, as the baby recently turned seven months old.

Makinwa used the moment to reflect on what motherhood means to her, particularly the responsibility that comes with raising a daughter. She described herself as “a woman raising a queen,” noting that it is her duty as a mother to guide and empower her child.

“A woman raising a queen. It is my duty to hand her a crown,” she wrote.

The media personality went on to explain that becoming a mother has given her a deeper understanding of responsibility and service. She described motherhood as both humbling and transformative, especially when raising a girl child in today’s world.

For Makinwa, the experience has also strengthened her determination to contribute positively to the world her daughter will grow up in.

“My first International Women’s Day as a girl mom is especially touching because not only is motherhood a call to service, but it is also a humbling ride with a girl child,” she wrote. “I must strive to make the world a safer place for her and remind her every day that she is the prize.”

She ended the message with a loving note to her daughter, Yakira Eliana, celebrating her growth as she turned seven months old.

“Happy IWD @yakira_eliana. Look who is seven months old now,” she added.

A Life-Changing Year

The past year has been a significant one for Makinwa, who welcomed her first child at the age of 40. The arrival of her daughter, Yakira Eliana, marked a deeply personal milestone for the media personality, who has often spoken openly about her desire to become a mother.

Her pregnancy and journey into motherhood became one of the defining moments of her year, transforming both her personal life and outlook.

Ahead of her first Mother’s Day celebration, Makinwa previously shared that it felt surreal to imagine people wishing her a happy Mother’s Day, as the idea of being a mother was still sinking in.

Since welcoming her daughter, she has frequently documented her experiences as a new mom on social media, offering followers glimpses into her life with the baby.

Celebrating New Family Traditions

The festive season last year was particularly memorable for Makinwa as it marked her first Christmas with her daughter.

She shared photos online showing herself and Yakira dressed in matching red outfits for the holiday celebration. In her caption, the media personality noted how different the season felt compared to previous years.

She reflected on how her Christmas mornings had once been quiet, but the presence of her daughter had brought a new kind of joy and energy into her home.

According to her, motherhood had filled her life with a deeper sense of happiness and gratitude.

“My heart is not just full; my cup runneth over,” she wrote while describing how much her life had changed since welcoming her baby.

In the lead-up to Christmas, she also posted a lighthearted video featuring her daughter dressed in matching pyjamas while standing beside their decorated Christmas tree. The proud mother jokingly praised the baby for performing well during the shoot and playfully revealed that she had “paid” her daughter for the appearance.

Makinwa also showed off her elaborate Christmas decorations, explaining that the holiday season felt more meaningful than ever because it was her first as a mother.

She described the celebration as the beginning of new family traditions she hopes to continue for years to come.

Marking Milestones

Since Yakira’s birth, Makinwa has made a habit of celebrating the baby’s monthly milestones online.

When her daughter turned four months old, the proud mother shared heartfelt messages describing the child as her “sweet girl” while expressing gratitude for the journey they had shared so far.

She also reflected on the challenges she had overcome, acknowledging that the path to motherhood had required patience, faith and resilience.

When Yakira turned three months old, Makinwa again celebrated the milestone with photos and an emotional message about the love she now feels as a mother.

She admitted that she never imagined experiencing such a deep and powerful bond until she held her daughter.

A Journey of Faith

Makinwa has also spoken publicly about the emotional journey that led to the birth of her daughter.

During an episode of her podcast, she became emotional while recounting how strongly she had prayed to become a mother before turning 40. According to her, the moment represented a personal prayer she had carried for years.

She revealed that shortly after celebrating her 40th birthday, she discovered she was pregnant — an experience she described as a direct answer to her prayers.

Motherhood, she said, has also reshaped her lifestyle. Known for her outgoing personality and active social life, Makinwa shared that she spent much of the year indoors during her pregnancy, which was a major adjustment for her.

Despite the change, she said the experience helped her prepare for the responsibilities of becoming a parent.

Now, as she marks her first International Women’s Day as a mother, Makinwa says the journey has given her a renewed sense of purpose — one centred on raising her daughter with love, confidence and strength.
