Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has spoken about the financial strain caused by the rising cost of basic amenities in Nigeria, revealing the significant amount he spends daily to power his home.
The 78-year-old film icon expressed concern over the worsening economic situation in the country, noting that the increasing cost of electricity and fuel has placed a heavy burden on many households.
Edochie made the remarks during a recent appearance on JIGSAW, a programme aired on African Independent Television (AIT), where he discussed the challenges Nigerians face in accessing essential services.
According to the veteran actor, maintaining electricity supply in his home now requires a daily expenditure of about N40,000, combining both public power charges and the cost of running generators.
“I spend N40,000 in my home every day for light. It disturbs me a lot. N10,000 for electricity and additional N30,000 on diesel and fuel,” he said.
He explained that the situation reflects the wider struggle faced by ordinary citizens who must constantly supplement unreliable power supply with alternative energy sources.
Beyond the issue of electricity, Edochie also criticised what he described as the government’s failure to address the needs of the average Nigerian. He questioned why living conditions appear to be deteriorating rather than improving.
“Nobody seems to be bothered about what is happening to the common man. Why must it keep getting worse on each new day? Can we not improve?” he asked.
The actor further raised concerns about what he perceives as the neglect of the South-East region in the distribution of major infrastructure projects.
He pointed specifically to railway development, alleging that the region has been sidelined in transportation planning.
“There was a time when somebody cut off the South-East in terms of railway transportation. Why must there be consistency in going backwards?” he asked.
Edochie’s comments come amid ongoing public discussions about Nigeria’s economic challenges, including rising energy costs, inflation, and infrastructure deficits affecting various parts of the country.
The legendary actor, widely respected for his decades-long career in Nollywood and his outspoken views on national issues, has previously used public platforms to speak about governance, cultural values, and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
His latest remarks highlight the frustration many citizens feel as they grapple with the high cost of living and limited access to reliable public services.
