Veteran Nollywood actress Ireti Doyle has opened up about her decision to remain silent following her divorce from fellow actor Patrick Doyle, stating clearly that the matter was never meant for public consumption.
Speaking during an appearance on The Morayo Show hosted by Morayo Afolabi-Brown, the respected actress explained that her silence was intentional and rooted in her belief that personal relationships should remain private.
According to her, the public is not entitled to every detail of a couple’s journey, especially when it involves deeply personal matters like marriage and separation.
Ireti, who has built a strong reputation in Nollywood over the years, said she only owes explanations, if any, to the close circle of family and friends who were present at the beginning of the union.
She emphasized that these individuals are the only ones who truly understand the dynamics of the relationship and therefore deserve any form of clarification.
The 58-year-old further expressed her views on the growing culture of sharing personal struggles on social media.
She questioned the need for individuals to “bleed” online for validation, warning that such actions rarely lead to healing or resolution. Instead, she encouraged people going through breakups or emotional challenges to focus on self-reflection and personal growth rather than seeking public sympathy.
According to her, the end of any relationship is often painful, regardless of the circumstances surrounding it. However, she maintained that assigning blame publicly or chasing online attention does little to address the real issues.
She advised individuals to take time to understand what went wrong in their relationships, with the goal of learning valuable lessons and avoiding similar mistakes in the future.
Her comments also subtly addressed the pressure public figures face to constantly explain their private lives to fans and followers.
Ireti made it clear that she does not subscribe to that expectation, adding that not every aspect of a celebrity’s life should be turned into public discourse or content for engagement.
Meanwhile, Patrick Doyle has previously spoken about their separation, maintaining a tone of respect towards his former wife.
He revealed that their marriage had ended long before it became public knowledge and noted that both parties had moved on with their lives.
He also addressed public conversations about Ireti retaining his surname, stating that he has no issue with it, as she earned it during their years together.
The former couple, who got married in 2004, finalised their divorce in early 2023 after a prolonged period of separation. Despite going their separate ways, both Ireti and Patrick Doyle have continued to thrive professionally, maintaining their relevance in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Their story reflects a broader conversation about privacy, respect, and emotional maturity, especially in an era where social media often blurs the line between public and personal life.
