Nigerian chef and public health scientist Nancy Umeh has revealed the emotional journey that led to her becoming a mother, disclosing that she endured eight miscarriages over seven years before finally welcoming her daughter via surrogacy in 2024.
Speaking on the Diary of a Naija Girl podcast, Umeh recounted the heartbreak, anxiety, and resilience that defined her struggle with secondary infertility, which began after the birth of her last child.
Reflecting on her path to motherhood, Umeh explained that after years of repeated pregnancy losses, surrogacy became her only option. Yet even during the surrogacy process, she experienced further miscarriages, compounding her emotional burden.
“I was having miscarriages a lot at that time. There was a time I had to talk to a therapist because of it,” she shared.
Umeh described one of the most painful experiences: “I had eight miscarriages. One was up to four months. I was gaining and losing weight. I had people congratulating me — and the baby just dropped the night before.”
The series of losses took a significant mental and emotional toll, leaving her in constant fear, even after her surrogate became pregnant. “Even when the surrogate was pregnant, I was praying that nothing would happen to the baby. Somehow, I thought it was because I was sharing too much,” she said.
Despite never meeting the woman who carried her child, Umeh expressed immense gratitude. “I really wish I could meet her, hug her and say thank you,” she said. “I have a child because of her. On her birthday, I cried.”
The arrival of her daughter, Talia Tobechukwu Umeh, marked the culmination of a long and challenging journey, one that has since ignited conversations about infertility, emotional healing, and the silent struggles many women face while pursuing motherhood.
Umeh’s story highlights the resilience and hope required to navigate the emotional complexities of infertility and surrogacy, offering inspiration to those experiencing similar challenges.
