Popular Yoruba comic actor Olaniyi Afonja, widely known as Sanyeri, has shared an emotional account of the challenges he faced while pursuing his acting career, revealing that his passion for entertainment once caused serious tension between him and his parents.
Speaking in a recent interview, the Nollywood star recounted how his ambition to perform on stage often put him at odds with his family, particularly his mother, who strongly believed that formal education was the only guaranteed path to success.
According to Sanyeri, his parents were deeply opposed to his early involvement in acting. At the time, they feared the entertainment industry would not provide him with stability or a secure future. Their disapproval was not subtle.
He disclosed that whenever he was caught at rehearsals or on a movie set instead of attending school, he faced severe punishment at home. The actor narrated one particularly humiliating experience that has remained unforgettable throughout his journey.
“There was a day Iya Niyi [my mother] came with a cane to beat me on stage,” he said. Sanyeri explained that during a live performance, his mother stormed the venue and disciplined him in front of the audience.
He added that his hands and legs were tied as part of the stage act at the time, leaving him unable to escape the punishment while fans watched. The moment, he admitted, was deeply embarrassing and painful.
Despite the public humiliation and consistent family pressure, Sanyeri said his love for acting never faded. Instead of abandoning his dreams, he made a bold decision to leave home and stay with his employer at the time in order to continue building his career.
That decision marked a turning point in his life, as he chose to endure hardship in pursuit of what gave him purpose and fulfillment.
Over the years, Sanyeri has grown into one of the most recognisable faces in the Yoruba movie industry, celebrated for his unique comedic style and expressive performances.
However, reflecting on his journey, the actor confessed that he carries certain regrets. Chief among them is his decision not to further his education.
“I regret not furthering my education,” he admitted, acknowledging that his parents’ strict stance was driven by love and concern for his future.
With maturity has come a deeper understanding of their fears and intentions. He now recognises that their resistance was rooted in a desire to protect him from uncertainty and hardship.
Sanyeri’s story highlights the struggle many young talents face when balancing parental expectations with personal ambition.
His experience underscores the generational divide that often exists between traditional views of success and the evolving opportunities within creative industries.
Today, while he enjoys the rewards of his persistence, Sanyeri’s reflection serves as both an inspiration and a cautionary tale encouraging young dreamers to pursue their passions, but also to value education and long-term planning along the way.
