Businessman Obi Cubana has clarified that his increasing involvement in Nigeria’s political space is not driven by personal ambition or the pursuit of power, but rather by a desire to contribute meaningfully to national development and inclusive governance.
In a statement released on Monday, the popular socialite and entrepreneur, who is known to be a supporter of President Bola Tinubu, explained that his engagement in political discussions is aimed at bridging the growing gap between government and citizens.
According to him, his focus is particularly on fostering communication between young Nigerians, the older generation, and people across different regions of the country.
Obi Cubana emphasized that his success has been built through private enterprise, hard work, and strategic investments, noting that he has never held public office or benefited from government patronage.
He stated that his interest in politics is rooted in creating platforms that encourage dialogue, civic participation, and national unity.
He further revealed that his recent exposure to political processes opened his eyes to a significant disconnect between government policies and the expectations of citizens.
According to him, even well-intentioned policies often fail to make real impact due to poor communication or lack of proper understanding of the people’s needs. This, he said, has contributed to declining trust in governance.
Highlighting the importance of trust in a democratic system, Obi Cubana stressed that transparency, accountability, and empathy must be prioritised by leaders.
He noted that rebuilding public trust requires deliberate and continuous effort, adding that citizens’ voices must always be respected and reflected in governance decisions.
Addressing criticisms that followed his recent comments, the businessman dismissed allegations suggesting he promotes anti-Igbo sentiments. He described such claims as false and divisive, insisting that he has always supported unity and inclusiveness among all ethnic groups in Nigeria.
According to him, any narrative aimed at creating division only weakens the country’s collective strength.
Obi Cubana also spoke on the need for coordinated governance at all levels, from local to federal, to ensure meaningful and sustainable development.
He highlighted the role of the City Boy Movement, which he described as a platform designed to encourage active participation from young Nigerians and the private sector in shaping policies and governance.
He concluded by cautioning against reducing political engagement to ethnic sentiments, urging Nigerians to focus instead on ideas, policies, and progress that promote national unity. According to him, true democracy thrives when citizens prioritise collective growth over division.
