A civil court in California has ruled against veteran entertainer Bill Cosby, ordering him to pay $19.25 million in damages to a woman who accused him of sexual assault dating back more than five decades.
The verdict was delivered by a jury in Santa Monica, where Cosby was found liable in connection with a 1972 incident involving Donna Motsinger, who is now 84 years old. The case adds to a long history of legal battles and allegations that have surrounded the once-celebrated comedian.
During the trial, Motsinger recounted her encounter with Cosby, stating that he had picked her up in a limousine and offered her wine before giving her a pill she believed was aspirin. According to her testimony, the substance quickly affected her ability to function, leaving her disoriented and vulnerable.
Court documents revealed that she began to lose awareness shortly afterward. “Next thing she knew, she was going in and out of consciousness… the last thing Ms Motsinger recalls were flashes of light,” the lawsuit stated, describing her fading memory of the events that followed.
Motsinger told the court that she later regained consciousness in her home, partially undressed, leading her to believe she had been drugged and sexually assaulted. Her account formed the basis of the civil suit, which ultimately led to the jury’s decision to award significant damages.
Cosby, now 88, has consistently denied the allegation, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings. His legal team challenged the claims, arguing that there was no concrete evidence to establish what had actually taken place. His lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, pointed out that the accuser herself acknowledged uncertainty about the details of the incident.
Despite the jury’s ruling, Cosby’s legal representatives have made it clear that the fight is not over. Bonjean confirmed that an appeal will be filed, signaling that the case could continue through further legal processes.
The case also revisited Motsinger’s connection to Cosby during the early 1970s. She had been working at the well-known Trident restaurant in Sausalito, a popular gathering spot for celebrities at the time, where she said she first encountered the entertainer.
Over the years, Cosby has faced accusations from more than 60 women, many of whom alleged similar patterns of behaviour involving the use of alcohol or sedatives. These claims have spanned several decades, significantly altering his public image and legacy.
Although numerous civil suits have been filed against him, Cosby’s criminal record has seen a more complicated trajectory. In 2018, he was convicted in a separate sexual assault case and sentenced to prison. However, that conviction was later overturned in 2021 due to a legal technicality, leading to his release.
The latest ruling in California represents another significant moment in the broader legal challenges he continues to face. While the decision does not carry criminal penalties, the financial damages imposed by the jury reflect the seriousness with which the claims were treated in civil court.
As the case moves toward a likely appeal, it remains part of a wider conversation about accountability, justice, and the long-lasting impact of historical allegations. For now, the jury’s decision stands as a major development in one of the most high-profile legal sagas involving a figure once regarded as a pioneer in the entertainment industry.
