Filmmaker and author Laju Iren has recorded an impressive start to her cinema career as her latest film, Onobiren: A Woman’s Story, topped the West African box office during its opening weekend.
The film grossed N30.1 million within its first three days in cinemas, according to figures released by FilmOne Entertainment.
The movie generated the revenue across cinemas in both Nigeria and Ghana between March 6 and March 8, making it the highest-grossing film in Nigerian cinemas during the period.
The strong debut saw the Nollywood production outperform several competing local and international releases during the same weekend.
The milestone is particularly significant for Iren, as the project marks her first theatrical release as an executive producer.
Known previously for her work as a filmmaker and storyteller, the successful cinema launch positions the project as a notable entry into the region’s theatrical market and highlights the growing influence of female-led productions in the industry.
The release of Onobiren: A Woman’s Story was strategically scheduled to coincide with celebrations surrounding International Women’s Day and the broader Women’s Month observances.
The film’s storyline reflects themes of identity, resilience and the strength of female solidarity, making its debut period particularly fitting.
Following the announcement of the film’s box office performance, Iren took to social media to express gratitude to audiences across West Africa for supporting the project.
She described the success as a significant milestone and thanked viewers for showing up at cinemas during the opening weekend.
According to the filmmaker, the achievement represents only the beginning, adding that she hopes to reach more milestones and break additional records as the film continues its theatrical run.
The story of Onobiren: A Woman’s Story centres on the journey of a young woman named Roli, whose life changes after she moves from Warri to Lagos. What initially begins as a migration story gradually unfolds into a deeper narrative exploring survival, purpose and personal discovery.
Through Roli’s experiences, the film highlights the challenges many women face while also emphasizing the importance of mutual support and solidarity among women navigating social and economic pressures.
The film features a strong ensemble cast made up of several well-known figures in Nollywood. Among the actors featured in the production are Bisola Aiyeola, Deyemi Okanlawon, Patience Ozokwor and Norbert Young.
Their performances contribute to the film’s emotional storytelling and have helped draw audiences to cinemas during its opening days.
Onobiren: A Woman’s Story was produced through a collaboration involving Africa No Filter, the Creative Economy Practice and Laju Iren Films.
With its strong debut performance across West Africa, the film is expected to continue attracting audiences in the coming weeks as it remains in cinemas nationwide.
The early success also signals growing momentum for Nollywood productions that centre on women’s stories and experiences, reinforcing the industry’s expanding presence in regional and international cinema markets.
