Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun has revealed that stepping into filmmaking required him to take major financial risks, describing the move as one of the boldest decisions of his career.

The entertainer, popularly known as AY, made the revelation after receiving the Trailblazer Award at the Silverbird Man of the Year Awards

Speaking after the recognition, AY described the honour as a powerful validation of the years he has spent building a career that spans comedy, filmmaking and live entertainment.

According to him, the award represents more than just recognition; it is also motivation to continue pushing creative boundaries within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

“It is deeply humbling. This award validates years of risk taking, innovation and consistency. Being recognised as a trailblazer tells me that daring to expand beyond comedy into filmmaking and live entertainment was worth it,” he said.

He added that the honour is not a final destination but rather encouragement to keep raising the bar and contributing to the growth of the creative industry.

Over the years, AY has built a strong presence across different areas of entertainment. From stand-up comedy shows to large-scale events and film production, the comedian has consistently expanded his brand. His contribution to Nollywood has also played a role in increasing the global visibility of Nigerian films.

While reflecting on his journey, AY also offered advice to young creatives hoping to succeed in the entertainment space. He stressed that talent alone is not enough and that upcoming entertainers must focus on understanding the business side of the industry.

“Build capacity before chasing applause. Talent is not enough. Learn the business, stay disciplined, remain consistent and never rely on shortcuts. Nigeria is challenging, but it rewards resilience and structure,” he said.

AY also recalled that his transition from stand-up comedy into film production came with several doubts and significant financial commitments. Despite the uncertainty, he said his belief in growth and expansion pushed him to move forward.

“Transitioning into film production was a major risk. There were doubts and heavy financial commitments. But I believed in growth beyond stand-up comedy. I studied the market, built strong partnerships and stayed persistent. That decision expanded my brand globally,” he explained.

Looking ahead, the filmmaker revealed that he is focused on expanding his entertainment brand and building a lasting legacy within the industry. He announced that his popular comedy show, AY Live, will return during the Easter celebration on April 5, while the brand is also gaining international traction.

In addition to live shows, AY disclosed that he is currently working on new film and digital projects aimed at strengthening Nollywood’s presence on the global stage.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting emerging talents through The AY’s Open Mic Comedy Challenge, a platform designed to nurture and promote young comedians.

“There are many brilliant talents across Africa and the Diaspora. Collaboration is about timing and alignment. When vision and structure meet at the right time, great things happen,” he added.

AY is widely known for producing and starring in successful box office films including 30 Days in Atlanta. He has also produced other popular titles such as A Trip to Jamaica and Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons, which helped cement his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most successful comedian-turned-filmmakers.
