Nollywood actress Biodun Okeowo has publicly defended her colleague, Aremu Afolayan, after he faced widespread criticism for comments made in a recent video that quickly went viral.
The uproar began when Afolayan, in what appeared to be a statement of gratitude, praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting his business during a period when the United Arab Emirates had restricted visas for Nigerians.
While his intentions were reportedly positive, many social media users interpreted his words as insensitive and dismissive of the difficulties Nigerians face, especially amid rising insecurity and economic challenges.
Following the backlash, Afolayan issued an apology on Instagram, explaining that his words had been misunderstood.
He acknowledged the seriousness of the situation in Nigeria and expressed regret over the public perception of his statement.
In response, Okeowo has appealed to the public to recognize the sincerity of her colleague’s apology.
She described Afolayan as a naturally jovial person whose personality can sometimes be misread, but she emphasized that his remorse is genuine and thoughtful.
“Aremu is sincerely sorry. Initially, when I saw his apology video, I wanted to laugh because he’s naturally fun, but by the end, I saw a man who was truly remorseful and sober.
He understands that what he said did not sit well with many of us, and he takes responsibility. Yoruba ni ti elese bati mo ese e ni ese kii pe lori ikunle, Ẹ̀dákùn Ẹ̀dáríjì!
According to him, there was no intention to hurt Nigerians, but he acknowledges and apologises that it came across that way.
He has reflected deeply and recognises the weight of his words. Please let’s forgive and stop the curses! Mofi Ikunle abiyamo Bewa
He is truly sorry.”
Okeowo’s comments have reignited discussions about accountability and forgiveness in the entertainment industry.
While some continue to criticize the actor, others have praised the actress for highlighting the importance of understanding intent and giving public figures the opportunity to make amends.
Her statement underscores a call for empathy and reflection in the wake of viral controversies, reminding Nigerians that genuine apologies deserve a chance.
