The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has suspended the medical director of Euracare Hospital alongside two other doctors following an investigation into the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Nkanu, one of Adichie’s twins, passed away on January 7, 2026, after complications arose during preparatory medical procedures. His death sparked widespread concern and prompted the author to issue a legal notice to the hospital, alleging that medical negligence and professional misconduct played a role in the tragic outcome.

Panel Establishes Prima Facie Case

In response to the complaint, the MDCN constituted an investigative panel to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. After reviewing submissions and testimonies, the panel concluded that a prima facie case of medical negligence had been established against both Euracare and Atlantis Hospital in their management of Nkanu’s care.

As a result, Tunde Majekodunmi, Euracare’s medical director; Titus Ogundare, the anaesthesiologist involved in the procedures; and Atinuke Uwajeg, the chief medical officer of Atlantis Hospital, have been suspended from medical practice in Nigeria.

The three doctors are barred from practising pending the determination of their cases before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, which will conduct a full hearing and deliver a final ruling.

Additional Doctors Indicted

Enejo Abdu, secretary of the investigative panel, disclosed that further findings revealed sufficient evidence of professional misconduct against 10 additional doctors affiliated with Atlantis Hospital.

Those listed include Adeseye Akinsete, Chidinma Ohagwu, Anthony Ajeh, Amarachi Bayo, Nkechi Peji, Olaoye Oludare, Agaja Oyinkansola, Patricia Akintan, Babatunde Bamgboye, and Raji Faidat.

According to the panel, while evidence against these practitioners met the threshold for further disciplinary review, eight other doctors who were investigated were cleared after an examination of all complaints, written responses, and sworn oral testimonies presented during proceedings.

Findings Described As Preliminary

Despite the weight of the conclusions reached, the panel emphasised that its determinations remain preliminary. It clarified that the findings do not represent a final verdict, as all affected doctors will be given the opportunity to defend themselves before the tribunal.

The disciplinary tribunal is expected to assess the evidence afresh and decide on appropriate sanctions, if any, after a comprehensive hearing process.

The investigation wrapped up during the panel’s 25th session held in Abuja on February 17 and 18. Meanwhile, a separate coroner’s inquest into the circumstances of Nkanu’s death is scheduled to commence on April 14.

The case has continued to draw significant public attention, with many closely monitoring developments as the legal and professional accountability processes unfold.
