The ancient city of Abeokuta came alive with colour, tradition, and cultural pride as the Egba people gathered to mark the grand finale of the 39th Lisabi Festival. The event, held at the historic Ake Palace, brought to a close a week-long celebration that began on March 23.

The Lisabi Festival is an annual cultural event organised to honour Lisabi Agbongbo Akala, the legendary hero who led the Egba people in a historic uprising against the Oyo Empire in the 18th century. His leadership played a crucial role in securing the independence of the Egba people, making him one of the most revered figures in their history.

Throughout the week, various traditional activities were held to commemorate this legacy. These included cultural rites, symbolic reenactments of historic battles, traditional drumming, and energetic dance displays that reflected the rich heritage of the Egba people. The festival also served as a platform for passing down cultural values and history to younger generations.

The celebration was held under the authority of the Alake of Egbaland, bringing together the four major Egba divisions — Ake, Oke-Ona, Gbagura, and Owu — in a unified display of identity and tradition. The gathering reinforced a strong sense of community among participants, both at home and in the diaspora.

A major highlight of the grand finale was the Egbaliganza cultural showcase, an initiative led by Lai Labode. The fashion exhibition celebrated indigenous creativity and entrepreneurship, with stunning outfits crafted from Adire taking centre stage. The colourful display of Adire fabrics not only showcased artistic excellence but also promoted local industry and craftsmanship.

Organisers had earlier clarified that Egbaliganza remains just one segment of the broader Lisabi Festival, designed to complement rather than redefine its historical and cultural significance. This reassurance helped preserve the authenticity of the event while still embracing modern elements.

Beyond the cultural displays, the festival also functioned as a major homecoming event for Egba indigenes living abroad. The occasion attracted dignitaries, including political leaders, business figures, and cultural enthusiasts, all of whom returned to reconnect with their roots and celebrate their shared heritage.

The influx of visitors contributed to increased economic activity across the city, with local businesses experiencing a surge in patronage. Markets, hotels, and transportation services all benefited from the heightened activity during the festival period.

Security was also a key focus throughout the celebration, with measures put in place at major venues to ensure the safety of attendees. The smooth coordination of events and peaceful atmosphere further enhanced the success of the festival.

As the 39th edition of the Lisabi Festival comes to a close, it once again reinforces the enduring legacy of Egba history and the importance of preserving cultural identity. For many, the event is more than just a celebration — it is a powerful reminder of unity, resilience, and pride in tradition.
