Nollywood actor Prince Eke has criticised some of his colleagues in the entertainment industry for allegedly supporting politicians despite the country’s persistent governance challenges.

The actor made his views known in a post shared on Instagram on Tuesday, where he accused certain entertainers of remaining silent about corruption and poor leadership in Nigeria

According to him, many celebrities choose to ignore national issues because they are more interested in the financial benefits they receive from politicians during election periods.

In his post, Prince Eke suggested that the public should not be surprised when they see some actors and musicians standing beside political leaders during campaign activities.

He argued that such alliances often occur because some entertainers prioritise money over speaking up about issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.

The actor wrote that for years, many individuals in the entertainment industry watched the country struggle with corruption and ineffective governance without speaking out.

“Actors and musicians alike watched Nigeria drown in corruption and bad governance and kept their mouths shut,” he said.

He further alleged that the silence of some celebrities is motivated by the hope that politicians will eventually reward them financially by inviting them to perform or appear at campaign events.

According to Prince Eke, some entertainers are willing to compromise their principles for financial survival.

He claimed that this is partly because many of them do not earn sustainable income from their past creative works.

“Why? Because they are waiting for politicians to throw them a few peanuts to come and dance during campaigns,” he wrote.

The actor also lamented the state of the entertainment industry, noting that if the Nigerian system worked properly, many actors and musicians would still be earning royalties from projects they participated in many years ago.

“If Nigeria actually worked, many of them would still be earning royalties from movies they acted in decades ago,” he added.

Prince Eke went on to make a more blunt accusation, claiming that financial hardship has made some entertainers desperate.

According to him, this desperation pushes them to accept offers from politicians, even if doing so means ignoring issues affecting the wider society.

“Many of them are broke, desperate, and perfectly willing to sell their conscience to the highest bidder,” he said.

The actor concluded his remarks with a phrase commonly used in Nigerian pidgin English, suggesting that moral principles do not necessarily guarantee financial security.

“After all, conscience no dey put food for their table,” he added.

Prince Eke has been a familiar face in Nollywood since the early 2000s. Over the years, he has featured in numerous films and television productions, building a reputation as both an actor and a vocal commentator on social issues.

His latest comments have sparked conversations on social media about the role celebrities should play in politics and national discourse

While some users agreed with his views about entertainers aligning with politicians for financial gain, others argued that individuals in the entertainment industry have the right to support any political cause they believe in.

The debate reflects a broader discussion in Nigeria about celebrity influence in politics, particularly during election seasons when actors, musicians and other public figures are often seen endorsing candidates or appearing at political events.
