The film, produced by Trino Motion Pictures and directed by Daniel Oriahi, is considered a major step forward for Nigeria’s film industry, widely known as Nollywood.
Its arrival on a major global streaming platform highlights the growing international recognition of Nigerian storytelling and filmmaking.
The Weekend tells the story of Nikiya, played by Uzoamaka Power, an orphan who decides to visit the family of her fiancé Luke, portrayed by Franklin.
What begins as a simple visit meant to formally introduce herself to her future in-laws quickly takes a dark and unsettling turn. As the weekend unfolds, Nikiya discovers disturbing secrets about the family she hopes to become a part of, leading to a tense and suspenseful storyline.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpenyong, Gloria Anozie Young, Damilola Ogunsi and James Gardiner.
Their performances have been widely praised for bringing depth and intensity to the film’s mysterious and suspenseful plot.
Before arriving on HBO Max, The Weekend had already built a strong reputation on the international festival circuit.
The film first premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York in 2024. Its selection for the festival marked another historic moment, as it became the first independently produced Nigerian film to screen at the globally respected event.
Following its debut at Tribeca, the film continued its international journey with screenings at other notable festivals, including the BFI London Film Festival and Screamfest Horror Film Festival in the United States.
These appearances helped introduce the film to a broader audience and demonstrated that Nigerian films within the thriller or “midnight movie” genre can attract significant global interest.
The film also enjoyed major success on the awards circuit. At the Monsters Fantastic Film Festival, The Weekend won the Best Film Monster Award, further strengthening its reputation as a standout production.
Back home in Nigeria, the film achieved remarkable recognition at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2024. It received an impressive 16 nominations and went on to win several major awards, including Best Film, Best Nigerian Film, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
These accolades helped solidify the film’s status as one of the most celebrated Nigerian productions of the year.
The Weekend premiered internationally at the Tribeca Festival in June 2024 before making its theatrical debut in Nigerian cinemas in August of the same year. Since then, it has continued to gain attention both locally and internationally.
Its arrival on HBO Max is being seen by industry observers as another significant step in Nollywood’s expansion onto global platforms.
The achievement not only highlights the talent of the cast and crew involved but also signals a growing appetite among international audiences for high-quality Nigerian thrillers and genre films.
With its compelling story, strong performances and international recognition, The Weekend is expected to introduce even more viewers around the world to the creativity and storytelling power of Nollywood.
