Award-winning British rapper and singer Tinie Tempah has opened up about his Igbo ancestry, connecting his artistic talent and creative flair to his Nigerian roots.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel on Monday, the multi-platinum artist reflected on the rich tradition of excellence among the Igbo people, highlighting how the achievements of notable figures from his ethnic group helped shape his own creative identity.
“I am from the Igbo tribe and I do believe that there’s something very intrinsically creative about Igbo people,” Tinie Tempah said.
He cited world-renowned authors Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie as examples of Igbo brilliance, noting their global recognition and influence. “Growing up, I started to understand that a lot of Black authors from Nigeria, specifically the Igbo tribe, who have won the Bookerman Prize—that’s a global book award—the likes of Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who was on Beyoncé’s album as well, have won that award,” he explained.
The rapper added that his heritage plays a role in his artistry. “So, I think my talent and creativity has something to do with my heritage and lineage and origin. And that’s beautiful,” he said.
