Popular Nigerian content creator, ZicSaloma, has sparked intense reactions online after sharing a blunt perspective on what it takes to escape poverty, urging people to become what he described as “financially heartless.”

The entertainer made the statement in a video posted on his Instagram page, where he clarified that being financially heartless does not mean being wicked or unkind. Instead, he explained that it involves being strategic, disciplined, and firm when it comes to handling money, especially in environments where financial boundaries are often ignored.

According to ZicSaloma, many people struggle to build wealth because once their income becomes public knowledge, pressure from family members, friends, and even acquaintances begins to mount.

He noted that in many African homes, earning money often comes with the unspoken expectation that one must constantly give, sometimes at the expense of personal financial goals.

Sharing personal experiences, ZicSaloma revealed that several of his early business ventures failed because relatives repeatedly dipped into his savings.

He explained that while the requests were often framed as temporary help, they eventually drained his resources and disrupted his plans. Over time, he said he learned the importance of protecting his income and prioritizing long-term stability over constant generosity.

The skit maker advised people to keep details of their earnings private, downplay their financial capacity, and learn how to say no without guilt.

He stressed that refusing certain requests does not make a person selfish, but rather intentional about their future. According to him, unchecked generosity can sometimes do more harm than good.

ZicSaloma also warned against excessive financial support for friends, stating that it can unintentionally create dependency instead of appreciation. He argued that constantly solving people’s financial problems may discourage them from finding their own footing, while placing unnecessary strain on the giver.

The video has since generated widespread debate across social media platforms. While some viewers applauded his honesty, agreeing that financial boundaries are essential for growth, others felt the message was too harsh and conflicted with cultural values that emphasize communal support and sharing.

Supporters of his view argued that poverty is often perpetuated by emotional spending and societal pressure, adding that self-preservation should not be mistaken for cruelty.

On the other hand, critics maintained that completely detaching from family responsibilities could erode traditional values and weaken social bonds.

Despite the mixed reactions, the video has succeeded in starting a broader conversation about financial responsibility, personal boundaries, and the difficult balance between generosity and self-growth in today’s economic climate.

ZicSaloma’s message ultimately highlights a growing mindset among young Nigerians—one that prioritizes financial literacy, independence, and long-term planning as tools for breaking free from poverty.
