The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into allegations of child molestation and abuse at a day-care centre in Lagos, following renewed public concern triggered by resurfaced social media posts allegedly linked to popular Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, professionally known as Simi.
In an official statement released on Friday, NAPTIP’s Director-General, Binta Adamu Bello, confirmed that the agency has directed its operatives to immediately commence a full-scale inquiry into the matter. She stressed that safeguarding children remains one of the agency’s highest priorities.
The statement read, “Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Adamu Bello, OON, has directed Operatives of the Agency to commence a full-scale investigation into the alleged Child Molestation and Abuse in a Day-care setting in Lagos, as deduced from the suggestive online post by a popular Nigeria Singer.
“While appreciating the genuine concern of Nigerians on the matter, the Agency wishes to inform the general public that all its communication platforms are active and available to take complaints from anyone who may have been abused or violated on the said Day-care.
“NAPTIP has launched a full investigation into allegations of child abuse at a Lagos daycare facility.”
The agency also called on members of the public who may have credible information related to the case to come forward and assist ongoing investigations.
“Anyone with useful information is urged to come forward and report through our official channels. Child protection remains our priority,” the statement added.
Social Media Trigger And Public Reaction
The development follows intense online conversations sparked by the circulation of screenshots from tweets dated 2012 and 2013, which were attributed to Simi. The posts, which recently resurfaced, quickly went viral, prompting speculation and concerns about potential abuse at a daycare facility in Lagos.
As the posts spread across social media platforms, many Nigerians called on authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter, citing the sensitivity of child welfare issues and the need for accountability.
Police, DSVA Also Step In
In addition to NAPTIP’s involvement, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has reportedly referred the case to the Commissioner of Police for a preliminary investigation. This step is expected to help establish the facts surrounding the allegations and determine whether any criminal violations occurred.
Officials say the collaboration between NAPTIP, DSVA, and the police is aimed at ensuring a transparent and thorough process that prioritises the safety and wellbeing of children.
Simi Breaks Her Silence
Reacting to the renewed attention surrounding the old tweets, Simi addressed the controversy, clarifying that the posts were misunderstood and did not relate to any form of inappropriate behaviour or child abuse.
The award-winning singer explained that the tweets were taken out of context and urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions based on misinterpretations. However, she also welcomed proper investigations, noting that transparency is crucial, especially in matters concerning child safety.
Focus On Child Protection
NAPTIP reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, especially children, and assured Nigerians that the agency would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth.
The agency further encouraged victims, guardians, or witnesses who may have relevant information to report through its official communication channels, promising confidentiality and swift action.
As investigations continue, Nigerians await further updates from the authorities, hoping the outcome will bring clarity, accountability, and justice where necessary.
