Afrobeat powerhouse Seun Kuti has made it clear that global stars cannot bypass him when trying to access the legacy of his father, the legendary Fela Kuti. In a candid revelation, Seun disclosed that both Diddy and Kanye West attempted to reach him indirectly, but their approaches were immediately dismissed.

"Na my side Diddy first take start, many of his envoys reached out... E just be like Kanye West. Kanye West send Bankulli to me. Make una go ask Bankulli wetin I tell am, because we dey see front. Nkan tamale kole bowa loju (we won't allow what we will eat or gain to cover our face). Why would they want to go and meet inferior when the original is there? They must first come to the original. Na when we come say we no want, then they can go then go to the inferior. That is how Kanye West came and was saying he was possessed by the spirit of Fela,  you? How?"

Seun emphasized that no amount of fame, influence, or wealth can substitute for respect. For him, Fela Kuti’s legacy is sacred, and those who wish to engage with it must do so with authenticity. The Afrobeat star’s reaction to Kanye’s claim of being “possessed by the spirit of Fela” was both blunt and incredulous: “You? How?”

By drawing on Yoruba wisdom and street-level honesty, Seun reinforced the importance of approaching the original source. He warned that shortcuts or intermediaries will not suffice, and respect must always precede opportunity.

Seun Kuti’s message goes beyond personal principle it is a firm stand on protecting African musical heritage and ensuring that Fela Kuti’s influence is honored appropriately. His statement is a reminder to international stars and fans alike: engage with the culture, but first face the source.

This stance further cements Seun Kuti’s position as a guardian of Afrobeat and an unwavering advocate for authenticity in the music industry.
