Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday welcomed the state’s One-Day Governor, Esther Etiyemonu, to Lagos House, Marina, in a symbolic event celebrating youth excellence and civic leadership.
The visit highlighted the state government’s continued support for initiatives that promote academic distinction and prepare young people for future leadership roles.
Etiyemonu earned the prestigious title after emerging overall winner of the 21st Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition held in December 2025 at the Eko FM Multi-purpose Hall.
A student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, she outperformed other finalists to clinch the top prize and the rare opportunity to serve as One-Day Governor a role that allows a student to experience governance firsthand by performing official state functions for a day.
She was accompanied on the courtesy visit by her deputy, Dorcas Awoyemi, and Secretary to the State Government, Olaide Salami.
During the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised Etiyemonu’s confidence, discipline and determination, describing her as a shining example of the potential embedded in Lagos youth.
In a post shared on Instagram, the governor congratulated her on the achievement, noting that her hard work and focus distinguished her among her peers.
He expressed pride in her accomplishment and encouraged her to continue striving for excellence, assuring her that the entire state was rooting for her success.
Etiyemonu’s victory came with a star prize of N1 million. Dorcas Awoyemi of Ikosi Senior High School finished second and received N750,000, while Olaide Salami of Angus Memorial Senior High School secured third place and went home with N500,000.
The competition has grown over the years into one of Lagos State’s most respected academic contests, drawing participants from public secondary schools across the state.
The One-Day Governor initiative is designed to expose students to the workings of government and deepen their understanding of civic responsibility.
By stepping into the shoes of the governor, albeit briefly, winners gain valuable insight into leadership, public administration and decision-making processes.
Earlier, the Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, had also hosted Etiyemonu and encouraged her to view the experience as preparation for greater leadership responsibilities in the future. He emphasized that the programme aims to nurture a generation of informed and responsible citizens who are ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
The spelling competition itself was initiated by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, alongside the wife of the Lagos State governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu. Over the years, it has served as a platform to encourage reading culture, intellectual development and healthy academic competition among students.
Etiyemonu’s emergence as One-Day Governor not only celebrates her personal achievement but also underscores the importance of investing in youth development.
Her story reflects the broader commitment of the Lagos State Government to empower young people and provide them with opportunities that inspire ambition, confidence and a sense of responsibility toward public service.
