Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu has weighed in on the ongoing cinema drama involving her colleagues, Kunle Afolayan and Funke Akindele, which has continued to generate conversations across the Nigerian film industry.
The debate began after Kunle Afolayan, during the premiere of his latest movie, made remarks about box office earnings and film promotion strategies.
The filmmaker stated that he was not interested in making ₦1 billion or ₦2 billion from cinema releases if he could not personally earn at least ₦10 million from such projects. He also appeared to take a swipe at some of his colleagues for what he described as excessive dancing to promote their movies.
Although Afolayan did not mention any names, many observers linked his comments to recent box office successes recorded by Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham.
Funke’s movie reportedly grossed ₦2.4 billion at the Nigerian box office, while Toyin Abraham crossed the ₦1 billion mark, achievements that were widely celebrated within and outside the industry.
Reacting to the comments, Funke Akindele fired back, making it clear that she was not responsible for anyone’s lack of progress.
She advised her colleague not to allow jealousy consume him, noting that there was enough space for everyone to thrive in the industry. The actress also went on to share a video of herself dancing while promoting her record-breaking movie, a move many saw as a subtle response to the criticism.
Joining the conversation, Regina Chukwu took to her Instagram page to share her thoughts on the situation. The actress reposted a message that preached unity, understanding, and personal growth, stressing that success in the industry comes in different forms and at different times.
The post read, “₦5 billion, ₦1 billion. Life is turn by turn. The dancer, the boaster, the comedian. Everybody will be alright in this industry. Do the one you can do without shading anyone.”
Regina’s post appeared to encourage peace among industry players while subtly reminding filmmakers and actors that everyone has their own unique strengths and strategies.
Interestingly, other industry figures have taken a more supportive stance amid the cinema competition. Actress Ini Edo, who also had a movie showing in cinemas around the same period, openly praised Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham for their achievements.
She noted that her respect for them had increased, applauding their dedication, strategic planning, marketing skills, and overall approach to filmmaking.
Similarly, media mogul Mo Abudu celebrated Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, and Ini Edo for their massive box office pull. She described them as phenomenal queens and praised them for breaking barriers, creating magic, and showcasing the strength and influence of women in Nollywood.
As conversations around cinema earnings, promotion styles, and competition continue, Regina Chukwu’s contribution adds a calming perspective, reminding industry stakeholders that success is not a one-size-fits-all journey.
Her message reinforces the idea that there is room for different creative expressions and paths to success in Nollywood, without unnecessary comparisons or shade.
