Actor and producer Gabriel Afolayan has partnered with the Lagos State Government to promote and preserve Yoruba heritage through a new Fuji music initiative.
The Nollywood star recently met with key government officials to discuss support for the project, which is aimed at celebrating and sustaining Fuji music as an important element of Yoruba culture.
Sharing photos from the meeting on Instagram, Afolayan described the engagement as successful and productive.
In attendance were Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Mrs. Bopo Oyekan Ismaila, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
According to Afolayan, the collaboration is focused on preserving Yoruba culture and heritage through a structured and innovative Fuji music platform.
The project, titled Fuji Rise Show, is a reality music competition designed to discover and nurture emerging Fuji talents.
The show is spearheaded by Fuji Central and produced by a team led by Bayo Alawiye. It seeks to provide a stage for young artists passionate about Fuji music, while also reintroducing the genre to a broader and younger audience.
Fuji music, deeply rooted in Yoruba tradition, has long been a defining sound in southwestern Nigeria. Over the decades, it has evolved while retaining its cultural identity, storytelling essence and rhythmic depth.
However, like many indigenous genres, it faces challenges in maintaining relevance among younger generations influenced by global music trends.
