Nigerian singer Simi has addressed the backlash that followed the resurfacing of some of her old tweets dating back to 2012.

The controversy erupted shortly after the singer made strong remarks condemning sexual violence in the wake of allegations involving TikToker Mirabel, who later withdrew her claims.

Simi had publicly stated that rapists deserved severe punishment, a comment that sparked mixed reactions online.

While many supported her stance against sexual assault, others began revisiting her past social media posts. Soon, tweets from over a decade ago resurfaced, drawing criticism and prompting heated debate across various platforms.

In some of the old tweets, Simi had jokingly described interactions involving a four-year-old child at the daycare where she once assisted her mother.

The posts, which were written in a casual and humorous tone at the time, were interpreted by some social media users as inappropriate. This led to widespread scrutiny and accusations, with critics questioning the consistency of her advocacy.

Responding to the situation, Simi took to her X page to clarify the context behind the tweets. She explained that she was 23 years old in 2012 and not a minor, emphasizing that she had nothing to hide.

According to her, she lived and worked at her mother’s daycare during that period while pursuing her music career. She described the tweets as lighthearted reflections of everyday experiences, noting that social media culture at the time involved sharing nearly every aspect of one’s life.

Simi stated that children can be playful and mischievous, and any posts she made were simply recounting amusing or affectionate moments.

She strongly denied any suggestion of wrongdoing, insisting that nothing she shared stemmed from perversion. The singer also pointed out that she was not famous at the time and therefore did not anticipate that her words would one day be scrutinized or misinterpreted on a large scale.

While acknowledging that some tweets have since been deleted, she explained that the decision was made with her family in mind. However, she maintained that removing them was not an admission of guilt but a step to protect her loved ones from unnecessary controversy.

Reaffirming her position, Simi stressed that her condemnation of rape and sexual assault is genuine and longstanding. She declared that speaking against sexual violence is not a performance but a reflection of her personal values. Although she admitted she is not perfect, she stood firmly by her call to end sexual abuse.

The episode highlights the complexities of social media history and how past posts can resurface years later, often stripped of their original context. For Simi, the moment has become an opportunity to clarify her stance and reinforce her commitment to advocating against sexual violence.
