The late Afrobeat and street-hop artist singer, Mohbad, is now at the center of a critical legal development as the court mandated three tissue-based DNA tests to resolve his ongoing paternity dispute.
Both Baba Mohbad and Wunmi’s legal teams are required to submit three foreign laboratories each. From these submissions, the court will select one lab per side and also appoint an independent laboratory, ensuring that all three tests produce matching results to avoid any discrepancies.
Baba Mohbad’s lawyer explained the family’s decision, stating, “We do not wish to use a government pathologist,” citing concerns over inconclusive findings from prior autopsy reports. He further noted that some foreign laboratories have specialized pathologists who can operate within Nigeria, which the family prefers to ensure transparency and accuracy.
The court clarified the financial responsibilities: Baba Mohbad will cover the cost of his chosen laboratory test as well as the court-appointed test, while Wunmi’s side will pay for their own. This arrangement underscores the court’s effort to balance fairness with accountability, ensuring each party manages their part of the testing process.
The case has been adjourned to February 10, 2026, giving both sides time to submit their preferred labs and prepare for the upcoming tests. Legal observers highlight that conducting three independent DNA tests, with results required to align, is intended to eliminate doubts and strengthen the reliability of the findings.
This ruling represents a significant step toward resolving the long-standing legal dispute over Mohbad’s estate and paternity matters. With public attention on the case, the upcoming tests and court decisions are expected to play a decisive role in determining both legal responsibility and the resolution of the family conflict.
