Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding his marriage to actress Judy Austin, making it clear that his personal decisions are entirely his own.
“I’m grown, so my marriage to Judy Austin is not my father’s business,” Yul stated, emphasizing his independence and the boundaries between parental opinion and adult choices.
The actor’s marriage to Judy came after a long-standing union with his first wife, May Edochie, with whom he shares four children. Yul and May’s marriage was once regarded as a stable example in the Nigerian film industry, but tensions arose following the announcement of his second marriage.
The revelation of his relationship with Judy Austin and the birth of their child led to public speculation and marked a turning point in his first marriage, ultimately culminating in divorce proceedings between Yul and May.
Addressing the family dynamics, Yul remained respectful toward his father, veteran actor Pete Edochie, who had expressed opinions about the situation.
“Pete Edochie is my father, I love him so much as my father, he can never get me angry. I can never be angry with him for whatsoever he says to me,” he said. Yul further explained: “I do whatsoever I want to do for him and I go away, I’m not moved by any word he said to me. I know he is not perfect but I love him. Even if he ask me to kneel down at this my age, I will because he is someone I love and respect so much.”
He also addressed the issue of parental involvement in personal decisions: “So, whatever he says, he is entitled to it. At this age, my problem cannot be what my father thinks about my personal decision. I should be able to do what is good for me without having to explain to anyone. Really men don’t explain or complain, you face it. So, why he said that is his business, how it makes me feel absolutely nothing.”
Yul Edochie’s statement underscores his commitment to personal agency and his determination to navigate his personal life on his own terms, despite public scrutiny and family opinions. His marriage to Judy Austin, though controversial, represents his choice and the evolving nature of relationships in the public eye.
