Nigerian music superstar and Grammy-nominated artiste Davido has revealed that one of the standout tracks from his 5IVE album, With You, featuring Omah Lay, nearly failed to make the final cut.

The Afrobeats singer made this disclosure during an interview with OkayAfrica, which was later reposted by music platform HYPETRIBE on Monday. According to Davido, the song did not initially impress his team during internal listening sessions and was quietly overlooked while selections for the album were being finalized.

“Man, it’s so crazy because that song almost didn’t make the album. With You was not in anybody’s top five,” Davido admitted.

At the time, the track reportedly lacked the immediate impact his team was looking for, making it easy to sideline during decision-making. However, its eventual rise has since turned it into one of the most important songs on the project—and a deeply personal reminder for the singer.

Reflecting on the song’s journey, Davido said its success often overwhelms him emotionally, especially during live performances. Knowing how close the track came to being dropped makes its reception even more meaningful.

“And now look at it go. Every time I was performing it, my heart would just start beating like, what if I didn’t put this song?” he added.

Since its release, With You has exceeded expectations, becoming one of Davido’s most successful recent records. The song has crossed the 100 million streams milestone on Spotify and recorded impressive chart performances across multiple regions. Its impact also contributed to another Grammy nomination for the singer, further cementing its significance in his catalogue.

Davido also spoke about how he received news of the Grammy nomination, describing the moment as unexpected and surreal. According to him, the call came while he was in Dubai, just days before his birthday, and in the middle of inspecting a car.

“They were like, ‘Oh yeah, another nomination.’ I was like, wow. Thank God,” he recalled.

The moment added to what has been a defining period in his career, marked by global recognition and consistent commercial success. For Davido, the nomination reinforced the importance of trusting creative instincts—even when initial reactions are uncertain.

Looking ahead, the singer revealed that his focus is now firmly on touring and releasing more music. He confirmed plans to return to the stage for major global performances, including a landmark appearance at Coachella 2026.

Davido is set to perform on both Saturdays, April 11 and April 18, 2026, at the iconic festival grounds in Indio, California. With this booking, he will stand as the only Nigerian artiste on the festival’s lineup—a major milestone for Afrobeats on the global stage.

“Going back on tour, definitely more music. I’m about to do Coachella. Big plans,” he said.

As With You continues to gain momentum, Davido’s revelation serves as a reminder that even songs initially overlooked can become career-defining hits. For fans and creatives alike, the story highlights the unpredictable nature of music—and the rewards that can come from taking a chance.
