Yeni Kuti, media personality and daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has called on contemporary artistes to stop comparing themselves to her late father, emphasizing the importance of respecting legacy.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, Yeni weighed in after attending the 2026 Grammys alongside family members to receive Fela’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Her message was clear: Fela’s impact remains unparalleled, and debates that attempt to measure current artists against him miss the point entirely.
“Don’t compare chalk and cheese. Fela is a legend, give him his flowers. He has done his part,” Yeni said. She stressed that Fela’s continued relevance nearly three decades after his death is testament to the lasting influence of his music.
“If you are still talking about him 29 years after his death and you’re comparing yourself with him, you’re not a dead man walking. So, comparing yourself with him is not a good thing,” she added.
Yeni urged modern artistes to focus on themselves and their contemporaries rather than trying to diminish the achievements of the legends who paved the way.
“Compare yourself with your peers and leave our legends alone. We have legends, let’s respect them,” she stated, underlining that the influence of pioneers like Fela is not a competition but a standard of excellence.
The conversation around comparisons to Fela was recently reignited when Nigerian superstar Wizkid claimed he is “bigger” than the Afrobeat legend. His remarks came in response to criticisms from Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, who publicly expressed concern over the frequent comparisons of current artists to his father.
The debate sparked wide discussions on social media and across Nigerian music circles, with many fans divided on the issue.
Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s contributions to Afrobeat and global music are widely recognized. His work not only defined a genre but also carried political messages and cultural significance that continue to resonate with generations.
Yeni’s remarks serve as a reminder that legends like Fela are not just figures to measure against they are benchmarks of artistry and influence that inspire respect, not rivalry.
As the music industry continues to evolve, the conversation around legacy and innovation remains critical. Yeni’s comments encourage artistes to focus on growth within their own sphere, building a career and style that honors the past without misappropriating it.
By respecting icons like Fela, contemporary musicians can celebrate their heritage while forging their own paths, ensuring that music remains a space for creativity, originality, and recognition of true pioneers.
