Prominent American civil rights leader and political activist, Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., has passed away at the age of 84.
His family confirmed that the revered figure died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning, surrounded by loved ones. In a statement announcing his death, the family described him as a tireless champion of justice whose life’s work transformed countless lives.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of civil rights leader and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Honorable Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr.,” the statement read. “He died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family.
“His lifelong dedication to justice, equality, and human rights helped shape movements for freedom and dignity across the world. A relentless advocate for change, he amplified the voices of the marginalized, from his historic presidential campaigns in the 1980s to mobilizing millions of voters, leaving a lasting legacy in history.”
Jackson rose to national prominence during the height of the United States civil rights movement in the 1960s, working closely alongside legendary activist Martin Luther King Jr. in the struggle against racial segregation and injustice.
Born on October 8, 1941, in Greenville, South Carolina, he later became a key leader within the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), where he played a pivotal role in organizing campaigns and protests aimed at securing equal rights for African Americans.
He was also present in Memphis, Tennessee, in April 1968, when Dr. King was assassinated, an event that deeply influenced his lifelong commitment to civil rights and social justice.
Beyond activism, Jackson made history in American politics by running for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988, becoming one of the most influential Black candidates to ever seek the office. His campaigns brought issues of racial equality, economic justice, and social reform to the forefront of national debate.
In 2017, Jackson revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a condition that gradually affected his health and mobility. His condition worsened in recent years, leading to his hospitalization in November 2025 due to complications associated with a degenerative illness.
Throughout his life, Jackson remained a powerful voice for the disenfranchised, advocating for civil rights, economic empowerment, and global peace. His influence extended far beyond the United States, inspiring movements for justice and equality worldwide.
