Folk musician Beautiful Nubia has stirred the Nigerian music scene with allegations against gospel artists Yinka Ayefele and BBO, claiming they lifted the melody of his iconic 1997 song Seven Lifes without permission.
Taking to his X account on Thursday, Beautiful Nubia, whose real name is Segun Akinlolu, expressed frustration over what he described as unauthorized use of his work.
He specifically pointed out Ayefele’s 2012 track My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti) and BBO’s 2026 release Amin, asserting that both songs borrowed key melodies from his original composition.
He wrote, “There was Yinka Ayefele with My Faith in God (Igbagbo Ireti) in 2012 and now someone called BBO with Amin this year. Both stole their melodies from our original song Seven Lifes. When will Nigerians (especially the so-called gospel musicians) learn to respect copyright?”
As of this report, neither Ayefele nor BBO has responded publicly to the allegations. Beautiful Nubia has been a defining figure in Nigerian folk music since the late 1990s.
He released his first album in 1997 and has since become renowned for his commitment to folk and roots music. Beyond performing, he founded the EniObanke Music Festival, an annual celebration highlighting traditional and folk music, giving younger audiences exposure to the country’s rich musical heritage.
The accusations have reignited conversations about copyright respect in Nigeria, particularly in the gospel music sector, where the borrowing of melodies is often contentious.
Many fans on social media have rallied behind Beautiful Nubia, praising his contributions to Nigerian music and calling for greater acknowledgment of original creators.
While the gospel artists in question have not made statements, the allegations highlight the ongoing challenges musicians face in protecting intellectual property in the digital age.
Beautiful Nubia’s career, marked by decades of dedication to preserving Nigerian folk traditions, adds weight to his claims.
With a loyal fan base and continued cultural impact, his call for respect for copyright resonates across the industry.
Whether Yinka Ayefele and BBO address these concerns remains to be seen, but the discussion underscores the importance of intellectual property awareness and the recognition of Nigeria’s musical pioneers.
