Afrobeats star and award-winning songwriter, Adekunle Gold, has shared a refreshing perspective on ageing, stating that getting older should be seen as a privilege and an advantage rather than a setback.
The singer made the remarks while reflecting on his recent 39th birthday, explaining that his outlook on life and success has evolved over the years. In an interview with The Nation, Adekunle Gold revealed that while birthdays once filled him with anxiety and pressure, they now bring him peace, gratitude, and deeper self-awareness.
“There was a time when birthdays used to scare me, I used to feel like time was tapping me on the shoulder, asking what I had to show for myself,” he said, recalling how he once struggled with expectations and self-doubt.
The Lagos-born artiste admitted that he used to believe success had a strict timeline, adding that he often felt pressured to reach certain milestones within a set period. “I thought progress had a deadline, though there was a point where you either arrived or you didn’t. But this year felt calm,” he explained, noting a shift in his mindset and emotional state.
Adekunle Gold’s comments come shortly after the release of his sixth studio album, Fuji, which has been widely praised by fans and music critics, with many describing it as his most impactful and mature body of work to date. However, the singer said he does not view the album as the peak of his career.
“I smiled when I heard and saw the tweets, not because they’re wrong, but because I see something else. One thing I know for sure is that I don’t have a peak. I feel like I’ve unlocked something, a new person, a new purpose,” he said, expressing optimism about the future and confidence in his creative journey.
The ‘Sade’ crooner, who rose to fame over a decade ago, credited his current sense of clarity and assurance to the lessons learned through years of growth, setbacks, and self-reflection. According to him, these experiences have helped shape his outlook on life, success, and fulfilment.
Adekunle Gold also addressed the societal pressure often placed on individuals to achieve success within a particular timeframe. He described such expectations as unnecessary and harmful, stressing that everyone’s journey unfolds at its own pace.
“There’s no such thing as being late to becoming who you’re meant to be, to achieving your dreams, to starting again. You’re not late, you’re informed,” he stated, encouraging people to embrace their unique paths without comparing themselves to others.
The singer’s message has since resonated with many fans, who praised his honesty and maturity. His reflections serve as a reminder that growth is continuous and that personal development does not come with an expiry date.
