Nigerian music superstar Wizkid has etched his name into global music history after becoming the first African artiste to surpass 10 billion streams on Spotify.

The milestone further cements his status as one of Africa’s most influential musical exports and a key driver of Afrobeats’ global expansion.

The streaming achievement reflects more than a decade of commercial success, international collaborations, and chart-topping releases that have helped introduce African music to a wider global audience.

Over the years, Wizkid has consistently broken barriers, collaborating with some of the world’s biggest music stars, including Drake, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown.

One of the major contributors to the historic figure is Wizkid’s appearance on Drake’s 2016 global hit One Dance, which alone has amassed close to four billion streams on Spotify.

The song remains one of the most streamed tracks in the platform’s history and played a pivotal role in bringing Afrobeats-inspired sounds into mainstream pop music.

Another major boost to Wizkid’s streaming numbers is Essence, his Grammy-nominated collaboration with Tems. The song became a global phenomenon, earning widespread acclaim and over 334 million streams on Spotify.

Often described as a cultural moment for Afrobeats, Essence marked the first Nigerian song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, further elevating Wizkid’s international profile.

Wizkid’s achievement also highlights the rapid rise of Afrobeats on the global stage. African artistes are now competing on equal footing with international acts, thanks largely to digital streaming platforms that have removed geographical barriers and given global audiences easier access to African music.

In comparison to his peers, Wizkid currently leads the pack of African artistes on Spotify. Burna Boy follows closely with approximately 9.5 billion streams, while Rema has recorded about 5.6 billion streams.

Tems, who has enjoyed massive international success in recent years, stands at roughly 4.4 billion streams, while South African pop star Tyla has accumulated around 3.6 billion streams.

Music analysts say Wizkid’s latest milestone is not only a personal victory but also a win for the African music industry as a whole. His success demonstrates how consistent branding, global collaborations, and digital distribution can propel African artistes to unprecedented heights.

Beyond the numbers, Wizkid’s influence can be seen in how Afrobeats has become a staple in international pop culture, festivals, and award shows.

From sold-out arena tours to major award recognitions, his career continues to set benchmarks for emerging artistes across the continent.

As Afrobeats continues to dominate global playlists, Wizkid’s 10-billion-stream milestone stands as a powerful symbol of Africa’s growing influence in the global music economy and the limitless potential of its creative talents.
