Nigerian rapper and singer Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has raised fresh concerns over the alleged spread of cultism within Nigeria’s music industry, sparking intense conversations across social media.
Expressing deep frustration, the controversial artiste claimed that only a very small number of Nigerian musicians have refused to join secret cult groups, suggesting that cultism has become disturbingly normalised within the entertainment space. According to Naira Marley, many artists allegedly seek power, influence, and protection through these clandestine organisations.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, the singer wrote:
“We no reach 5 weh never join cult for this [music] industry. Person weh put u for cult self dey carry police escort up and down.”
The statement quickly gained traction online, with fans and industry observers debating the implications of his claims. Some interpreted the post as a reflection of the pressures young artistes face while trying to survive in a highly competitive industry, while others questioned the extent to which cultism truly influences success in Nigerian music.
Naira Marley went further to criticise the perceived hypocrisy of those allegedly promoting cultism while still depending on state security for personal safety. His comment implied that even individuals who claim to have supernatural or group-based protection still feel unsafe enough to move with armed police escorts.
This is not the first time the “Soapy” crooner has addressed rumours linking him to cultism. In the past, Naira Marley has strongly denied any involvement with secret cults. He previously revealed that he was once threatened by suspected cult members for refusing to join their group, a claim he says reinforces his stance against such associations.
Over the years, allegations of cultism have frequently surfaced in conversations about Nigeria’s music and entertainment industries, often tied to themes of rivalry, power struggles, and personal security. However, few high-profile artists have spoken as openly about the issue as Naira Marley has now done.
While his comments have once again placed him at the centre of controversy, they have also reignited broader discussions about the hidden challenges facing Nigerian musicians, especially emerging talents navigating fame, influence, and survival in the industry.
As reactions continue to pour in neither industry bodies nor security agencies have officially responded to the claims, leaving fans and stakeholders to reflect on the deeper implications of Naira Marley’s explosive revelation.
