United States President Donald Trump has unveiled plans to withdraw the US from 66 United Nations and international organizations, a move that could significantly reshape America’s engagement with key global institutions focused on climate change, peace, democracy, and humanitarian efforts.

The announcement came via a presidential memorandum released by the White House on Wednesday evening.

According to the memorandum, the decision followed a comprehensive review of “organizations, conventions, and treaties” that the administration deemed contrary to US interests.

As part of the policy shift, the US plans to end participation in these bodies and cut off all related funding.

The White House list identified 35 non-UN organizations affected by the withdrawal. Among these are the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Notably, while the IPCC is technically listed as a non-UN entity, it is backed by the United Nations and plays a critical role in assessing climate change evidence and providing reports that guide policymakers worldwide.

In addition, the US intends to exit 31 UN entities, including the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Democracy Fund, and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), which focuses on maternal and child health. Some of the targeted UN bodies provide protection to vulnerable groups in conflict zones, such as the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children in Armed Conflict.

The decision could therefore have far-reaching implications for international humanitarian and development programs that rely heavily on US support.

The announcement has drawn reactions from the global community. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the organization would respond formally to the announcement by Thursday morning, reflecting the seriousness of the potential shift.

Despite previous statements expressing a desire to limit US involvement in UN affairs, Trump’s administration has maintained a strong influence on international decision-making processes.

Analysts suggest that this withdrawal could disrupt longstanding global cooperation on issues like climate change mitigation, democracy promotion, and human rights protection.

Domestically, the memorandum is expected to spark debate over America’s role on the global stage. Critics argue that cutting ties with international bodies could diminish US influence and isolate the country from critical policy discussions, while supporters maintain that the move prioritizes national interests and reduces financial burdens on the US government.

This development comes amid other high-profile foreign policy decisions by the Trump administration, including continued involvement in Venezuela’s oil sector and broader economic negotiations worldwide.

The withdrawal plan, if fully implemented, could mark one of the most extensive retrenchments of US engagement with multilateral organizations in recent history.

As this story continues to develop, global and domestic observers are closely watching the implications for diplomacy, international aid, and environmental policy.

The US’s relationship with the UN and other international organizations could face a fundamental recalibration, reshaping the dynamics of global cooperation for years to come.
