Afrobeats superstar Tiwa Savage has opened up about her intentional approach to single parenting, highlighting how she balances love with discipline to instill ambition and drive in her 10-year-old son, Jamil.
In a series of posts on her Instagram story, Savage echoed sentiments expressed by renowned businesswoman Ibukun Awosika, who advised parents against spoiling their children, cautioning that overindulgence could stifle ambition and motivation. The singer explained that her parenting strategy is aimed at ensuring Jamil develops a strong work ethic and appreciation for life’s opportunities, rather than growing up expecting everything on a silver platter.
“Pastor Awosika said, ‘Do not kill your children’s dream by using your success to kill their ambition,’” Tiwa wrote. She stressed that children who are constantly provided with luxury and comfort might lack the drive to pursue meaningful goals. “If they always have everything and they’ve lived such a luxurious life, they MIGHT grow up without passion, drive, ambition. You have to have a need or lack of something to drive you to pursue your dream. A dream should be something bigger than your reality. Something you wish you have that you don’t already.”
Tiwa revealed that part of her approach involves exposing Jamil to experiences that foster humility and adaptability. For instance, while the singer often flies private for convenience, she ensures her son experiences economy class travel on commercial flights. This, she said, helps him understand that not every moment in life will be catered to luxury.
“Coincidentally, this is something I have started doing with Jamil. Apart from when we fly private, when we do fly commercial I have started putting him in economy,” she explained. “Last time we flew and he was in economy, he was upset with me. I had to keep going back and checking on him (mind you he was with his nanny). He said he was having neck pains and he couldn’t stretch his legs—someone whose legs are still short couldn’t even touch the front seat.”
In addition to travel, Tiwa shared that Jamil’s privileges and treats are earned through effort, emphasizing the value of responsibility and achievement. She noted that if her son wants to purchase items like Roblox, he must do so by completing house chores or attaining good grades. Screen time, snacks, and candy are limited during the week, with priority given to structured activities and personal growth.
“He is not allowed iPad, snacks, or candy during the week. Bible study every night before bed. Thanks, aunty @fenenellz, for introducing us to that,” Tiwa stated. The singer added that her parenting approach is grounded in fostering discipline and strong moral foundations.
Despite the rules, Tiwa emphasized that her son is a “really good kid” and that her measures are rooted in love and intentionality. “Jamil is actually a really good kid, though I am intentional about setting a good foundation for him—that’s real love,” she said.
