President Bola Tinubu has applauded Nigerian artistes who recorded major victories at the 9th edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), describing their success as a clear sign of Nigeria’s growing dominance and influence in African and global music.

In a statement released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said the impressive showing by Nigerian musicians once again highlighted the strength, creativity and global appeal of the country’s music industry. According to him, the awards have brought pride to the nation and reinforced Nigeria’s position as a cultural powerhouse on the continent.

“I warmly congratulate our outstanding Nigerian artistes for their remarkable achievements at the 9th edition of the All Africa Music Awards. Your success on this great continental stage is a proud moment for our nation and a strong reflection of the depth of talent, creativity and hard work that define Nigeria’s music industry,” Tinubu said.

He noted that beyond the trophies, the artistes had helped project Nigeria’s culture and amplify the voices of young people across Africa and beyond.

“You have not only won awards; you have projected our culture, amplified the voice of our youths and strengthened Nigeria’s creative identity across the continent and beyond. I commend each of you for your dedication and urge you to continue to use your talents to inspire hope, unity and pride, while contributing meaningfully to the growth of our creative economy and the development of our nation,” the President added.

Nigerian artistes were among the biggest winners at the ceremony, which held from January 7 to 11, 2026, in Lagos. The city was selected as host by the African Union Commission in April 2025, further underscoring its status as a major entertainment and cultural hub in Africa.

At the awards, Rema emerged as one of the night’s biggest stars, clinching the prestigious Artiste of the Year award. He also won Best Male Artiste in Western Africa and Best African RnB and Soul, cementing his place as one of Africa’s leading contemporary acts.

Burna Boy secured the Album of the Year award, while Shallipopi claimed Song of the Year and Best African Collaboration alongside Burna Boy. Other Nigerian winners included Phyno, who was named Best African Hip-Hop Artiste, and Qing Madi, who picked up the Most Promising Artiste award. Yemi Alade won Best Soundtrack, Chella received the African Fans’ Favourite award, and industry veterans Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye were honoured with the AFRIMA Legendary Award for their long-standing contributions to African music.

President Tinubu also commended Lagos State for successfully hosting the continental event, praising the state government for providing a conducive environment for artistes, delegates and guests from across Africa.

“I commend Lagos State for once again proving its capacity as Africa’s creative and entertainment capital. I congratulate the Lagos State Government and His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the excellent hosting of Africa’s global music awards and for providing a safe, vibrant and welcoming environment for delegates, artistes and guests from across the continent,” he said.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and the creative sector, the President described culture and music as powerful tools for national development.

“Culture is the soul of a people, and music remains one of Africa’s strongest voices. I remain deeply committed to supporting initiatives that promote our culture and empower our creative talents,” Tinubu stated.

He further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to prioritise the creative economy, stressing that industries such as music, film and fashion have strong potential to drive job creation, tourism and economic growth.

Founded in 2014 by the International Committee of AFRIMA in partnership with the African Union Commission, the awards platform continues to attract top talent from across the continent. The 9th edition drew over 1,216 artistes, delegates and industry stakeholders from at least 48 African countries, featuring events such as the Africa Music Business Summit, performances at the AFRIMA Music Village, and a sold-out grand finale at the Eko Convention Centre, where winners received the iconic 23.9-carat gold-plated AFRIMA trophy.
