British boxing icon Anthony Joshua is grieving after a tragic road accident in Nigeria left two of his closest friends and team members dead — and their bodies are now being prepared for repatriation back to the UK or their home countries.
The devastating incident has shocked the sports world and thrust Nigeria’s notorious road dangers into the spotlight.
The crash occurred late December 29, 2025, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of the busiest highways in West Africa. A Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck, killing Latif “Latz” Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach, instantly at the scene. Both men, described as close friends and integral members of Joshua’s camp, were reportedly seated at the point of impact.
Joshua, 36, suffered only minor injuries and was hospitalized in Lagos for observation. On January 1, 2026, authorities confirmed he had been discharged from Lagoon Hospital and deemed medically fit to continue his recovery at home.
In an emotional statement, Lagos and Ogun state officials said Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos where the lifeless bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were being prepared for repatriation to the UK or wherever their families arrange. Officials described the ceremony as a solemn farewell before their remains are flown home as parcels — a grim reality no one expected when the group arrived in Nigeria alive and in high spirits.
The tragedy has drawn widespread reactions from fans, fellow athletes, and the global boxing community. Promoter Eddie Hearn paid tribute on social media, saying “Rest in peace Latz and Sina. Your energy and loyalty… will be deeply missed.”
As tributes pour in, questions linger about road safety on Nigerian highways, where excessive speed and wrongful overtaking are among the leading causes of deadly crashes. The heartbreaking loss has turned a sporting celebration into a stark reminder of life’s fragility — especially when loved ones are lost far from home.
