Chelsea Football Club have parted ways with head coach Enzo Maresca after 18 months in charge at Stamford Bridge, bringing an abrupt end to the Italian’s tenure amid a difficult run of form in the Premier League.

The decision was confirmed in an official statement released by the club on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Chelsea stated that both parties mutually agreed that a change was necessary as the team continues to compete on multiple fronts this season, including the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Maresca departs with Chelsea sitting fifth in the Premier League table, but a worrying 15 points behind leaders Arsenal.

The club’s recent struggles, which saw them record just one win from their last seven league matches, appear to have played a major role in the decision.

Despite remaining within touching distance of the top four, performances and results have failed to meet expectations set at the start of the campaign.

In their statement, Chelsea acknowledged Maresca’s achievements during his time at the club, highlighting successes in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The club described those triumphs as an important part of their recent history and expressed gratitude for the coach’s contributions.

“Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted company,” the statement read. “During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the club.”

Chelsea further explained that with key objectives still to play for across four competitions, both the club and the coach felt a change would give the team the best chance of getting their season back on track.

Maresca’s final game in charge was Tuesday night’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

The match was followed by reports of tension behind the scenes, after the Italian coach declined to attend his post-match press conference. His absence was later attributed to illness, though it fueled speculation about his future at the club.

Chelsea are expected to move quickly to appoint a new head coach, with an announcement anticipated within days. The timing is crucial, as the Blues face a demanding January schedule that includes nine fixtures across four competitions.

The club returns to action on Sunday with a tough away trip to face Manchester City, a match that could have significant implications for their league ambitions. An interim coaching setup is expected to oversee preparations for the encounter while the search for a permanent replacement continues.

Maresca joined Chelsea amid high expectations and was seen as part of the club’s long-term project. While his tenure delivered silverware, inconsistent league performances ultimately proved costly.

As Chelsea turn the page once again, attention will now shift to who takes charge next and whether the new appointment can stabilize the squad and revive their push for domestic and European success.
