Afrobeats singer Simi has opened up about the difficult personal and health challenges she battled while working on her latest single, Where You Dey, featuring fellow vocalist Chike. The singer revealed that what should have been a smooth and exciting release turned into an emotionally and physically draining period that forced her to delay the song far longer than planned.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Simi explained that Where You Dey was initially scheduled for release last year, shortly after she teased fans with a snippet. However, health struggles made it nearly impossible for her to complete the project at the time.
“I really, really, really wanted to drop this song last year. When I first put out the snippet, I was so excited — but it was hard to finish it on time because everything was a blur,” she wrote.
According to the singer, the delay was not due to lack of interest or commitment, but rather the toll her body and mind were taking on her during that period. She described dealing with constant illness, weakness, and fatigue while still trying to show up creatively.
“I was sick and weak and nauseous and tired and my body just wouldn’t do what I wanted it to. Even in the snippet video, I wasn’t feeling great. I was just trying my best,” Simi shared.
Despite her condition, the song still moved forward, thanks in part to Chike’s professionalism and enthusiasm. Simi said she had no doubts about who she wanted on the record, noting that Chike’s voice and emotional delivery made him the perfect fit.
“I adore Chike’s voice and I knew it was him that had to be on the song with me,” she said. “When I asked him to give me a verse, he was so ready to go. As soon as he came back into town, he came over to my studio the next day. I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”
Interestingly, Simi revealed that Chike was unaware of the extent of her health struggles at the time of recording. It was only later, when she revisited studio footage, that she fully appreciated how difficult the session had been for her physically.
Beyond recording, the challenges continued into post-production. Simi admitted that mixing the track became another uphill task, adding to her frustration and exhaustion. Eventually, she made the decision to handle the mastering herself—despite openly disliking that part of the process.
“When the song was done, I struggled to mix it. Even so, I decided to master it myself. I hate mastering, so I don’t know what I was thinking,” she confessed.
The singer also expressed disappointment about not being able to promote the song as much as she wanted. She explained that while fans were eager for the release and constantly asking about it, she simply did not have the energy to create content or push the record the way she normally would.
“Everyone had fallen in love with the song and was asking me to put it out. I didn’t have the energy to make content. Given how much I love this song, I’m a little bummed I couldn’t give it the energy it deserves,” she wrote.
Still, Simi encouraged listeners to embrace the song with empathy, explaining that Where You Dey was born out of resilience, love, and determination. She emphasized that despite the struggles, her passion for music never faded.
In a subtle response to claims that marriage has slowed her career, Simi made it clear that the song stands as proof of her continued dedication to her craft. According to her, Where You Dey represents not just a collaboration, but a reminder that she is still fully invested in making meaningful music—no matter the obstacles.
Ultimately, Simi’s candid reflection has resonated with fans, offering a rare glimpse into the unseen battles artists often fight behind the scenes while delivering the music audiences enjoy.
