Nollywood continues to shine brightly in 2026, delivering films that captivate audiences with compelling stories, breathtaking visuals, and performances that linger long after the credits roll.

This January, cinema-goers are treated to a remarkable array of releases that blend drama, comedy, action, and cultural narratives, showing that Nigeria’s film industry is more dynamic than ever.

One of the standout films this month is “Behind The Scenes,” led by the ever-talented Funke Akindele. The story revolves around Aderonke “Ronky-Fella” Faniran, a successful real estate entrepreneur whose generosity and dedication to her family lead her into unexpected personal and financial challenges.

Played masterfully by Scarlet Gomez, Ronke navigates the pressures of being the family’s backbone while confronting betrayal, entitlement, and emotional exhaustion.

The ensemble cast, including Iyabo Ojo, Uzor Arukwe, Ibrahim Chatta, and Ini Dima-Okojie, provides depth and relatability, creating a film that resonates with many Nigerians familiar with the demands of family responsibilities.

In the realm of comedy, “Oversabi Aunty” delivers both laughs and life lessons. Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi stars as Toun, a church usher whose overbearing efforts to “correct” everyone around her create chaos in her household.

A disastrous wedding event forces Toun to face the consequences of her meddling ways. With the support of actors like Mike Ezuruonye, Jemima Osunde, and Enioluwa Adeoluwa, the film skillfully balances humor with a moral narrative about boundaries and personal growth.

Veteran performers Ngozi Ezeonu and Queen Nwokoye add gravitas to the story, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking.

For fans of high-energy thrillers, “Gingerrr” offers an unforgettable heist story. The film follows four women, united by circumstance and personal vendettas, who execute a daring robbery.

Bisola Aiyeola, Bukunmi ‘KieKie’ Adeaga-Ilori, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Wumi Toriola deliver commanding performances, while the supporting cast including Lateef Adedimeji, Timini Egbuson, and Shaffy Bello—adds intrigue and tension to this stylish, action-packed narrative.

Epic storytelling is on full display in “Colours of Fire,” directed by visionary Niyi Akinmolayan. The film explores forbidden love between Akinbode (Uzor Arukwe) and Moremi (Osas Ighodaro), members of rival tribes, against a backdrop of ancient conflicts and legendary battles.

The visual grandeur and mythic storytelling are complemented by strong performances from Femi Branch, Ibrahim Chatta, Mercy Aigbe, and Gabriel Afolayan, making it a cinematic experience that lingers in the viewer’s mind.

Lastly, “Agesinkole 2 (King of Thieves)” continues the Yoruba epic saga of the notorious bandit Ajeromi.

Femi Adebayo reprises his role, delivering a thrilling tale of corruption, power, and revenge. Odunlade Adekola, Toyin Abraham, Yemi Solade, Muyiwa Ademola, Fathia Balogun Williams, and Adebayo Salami contribute to a powerful ensemble that blends Yoruba mythology, mysticism, and cinematic spectacle seamlessly.

This January lineup proves that Nollywood is evolving into a powerhouse of diverse storytelling. From heartfelt family dramas to thrilling heist narratives and visually stunning epics, the industry continues to redefine African cinema, keeping audiences eagerly anticipating each new release.

With talents like Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, and Uzor Arukwe leading the charge, 2026 promises to be an unforgettable year for Nigerian cinema.
