Born in 1932 in Voghera, northern Italy, Valentino showed an early passion for fashion. He later trained in Paris under some of the finest couture houses before returning to Italy to establish his own fashion house in Rome in 1959.
His debut collections quickly gained attention, setting him apart as a master of refined glamour and classic silhouettes.
Valentino became globally renowned for his signature shade, famously known as “Valentino red,” a bold yet elegant color that became synonymous with luxury evening wear.
His designs were instantly recognizable and came to define red-carpet sophistication for generations of women.
In 1960, Valentino met Giancarlo Giammetti, his longtime business and romantic partner. Together, they transformed Valentino SpA into one of the world’s most influential luxury fashion brands. Their partnership played a key role in expanding the fashion house into a global empire while maintaining its couture heritage.
Throughout his illustrious career, Valentino dressed some of the most powerful and glamorous women in the world.
His clientele included Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Joan Collins, Queen Paola of Belgium, and Begum Aga Khan. Hollywood stars regularly turned to Valentino for major red-carpet moments, including Jane Fonda, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway.
Even in later years, his influence remained strong. Modern celebrities such as Zendaya, Carey Mulligan, and Gemma Chan continued to honor his legacy by wearing his creations, proving that his designs transcended generations.
Valentino Garavani leaves behind a towering legacy in fashion history. His work did not merely follow trends; it shaped them. As the world mourns his passing, his timeless designs will continue to live on, cementing his status as one of fashion’s greatest icons.
