Afrobeat musician and activist Seun Kuti has ignited a fresh wave of controversy on Nigerian social media after launching a blistering attack on fans of global music star Wizkid, popularly known as Wizkid FC. The outspoken son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti strongly condemned ongoing comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, describing them as misleading, disrespectful, and historically inaccurate.
The controversy erupted after Seun Kuti reacted to narratives pushed by some Wizkid fans portraying the Grammy-winning singer as the “new Fela.” According to Seun, such claims represent an attempt to appropriate Fela’s identity, image, and revolutionary legacy for modern pop validation.
He stressed that Fela’s influence transcended music, extending deeply into political resistance, cultural revolution, and African consciousness — elements he believes cannot be replicated through commercial success alone.
In his words, Seun Kuti stated:
“Wizkid fc needs to keep Fela’s name out of their mouth. You people try to steal the man image. You try to claim your fake artiste is the new Fela. It’s an insult to Fela to call Wizkid the new Fela. Wizkid fc are the most !gn0 rãnt fanbase in the world.”
The fiery remark immediately sparked intense debate online. Supporters of Seun Kuti applauded him for fiercely defending his father’s legacy, arguing that Fela Anikulapo Kuti remains a singular figure in global music and African political history whose impact cannot be diluted by pop culture comparisons. They emphasized that Fela’s activism, confrontations with military regimes, and cultural defiance set him apart from contemporary entertainers.
On the other hand, critics accused Seun of unnecessary hostility and disrespect toward Wizkid, pointing out that acknowledging Wizkid’s global influence does not automatically diminish Fela’s legacy. Some users argued that the comparison stems from influence, not replacement, while others felt Seun’s choice of words escalated the situation unnecessarily.
Despite the backlash, the debate highlights a larger conversation about legacy, cultural ownership, and the evolving definition of Afrobeat in modern times. As Nigerian music continues to dominate the global stage, tensions between tradition and contemporary stardom appear far from settled.
