Kanye West Apologizes for Antisemitic Remarks, Blames Brain Injury

American rapper Kanye West, who now goes by Ye, has publicly apologized for his past antisemitic remarks, attributing his controversial behaviour to an undiagnosed brain injury sustained more than 25 years ago.

In a full-page advertisement published in The Wall Street Journal on January 26, titled “To Those I’ve Hurt,” Ye detailed what he described as a devastating health battle that caused him to lose touch with reality.

The ad, signed by Ye and funded by his company Yeezy, also included contact information for the company’s chief financial officer.

Ye explained that the incident causing his long-term health issues was a car accident that broke his jaw and injured the right frontal lobe of his brain.

While the external injuries healed, the deeper internal damage went unnoticed, leading to serious mental health complications and a diagnosis of bipolar type-1 disorder.

According to Ye, the disorder created a distortion in his perception, leaving him convinced that he was seeing reality clearly while, in fact, losing his grip on it.

“Bipolar disorder comes with its own defense system. Denial. When you’re manic, you don’t think you’re sick.

You feel like you’re seeing the world more clearly than ever, when in reality you’re losing your grip entirely,” Ye wrote.

He acknowledged that during manic episodes, including a particularly severe four-month period in early 2025, he engaged in destructive actions and said things he deeply regrets, even hurting people he loves most.

Ye credited his wife, Bianca Censori, for encouraging him to seek help after hitting rock bottom. Regarding his antisemitic remarks and actions, which included selling merchandise with swastikas, Ye described these moments as “out-of-body experiences” triggered by his mental health condition.

He emphasized that he is not a Nazi or antisemitic and expressed love and respect for Jewish people.

He also issued an apology to the Black community, writing, “To the black community – which held me down through all of the highs and lows and darkest of times.

The black community is, unquestionably, the foundation of who I am. I am so sorry to have let you down. I love us.”

Ye stated that he has since found a “new baseline” through a combination of medication, therapy, exercise, and clean living. He also mentioned that reading about others who had experienced similar struggles helped him understand he was not alone.

“I’m not asking for sympathy, or a free pass, though I aspire to earn your forgiveness. I write today simply to ask for your patience and understanding as I find my way home,” Ye concluded.

Ye’s controversial remarks first gained widespread attention in late 2022, including a tweet in which he threatened Jewish people. His public apology marks a significant step in his efforts to make amends and take responsibility for the impact of his actions.
