Popular Nigerian reality television star and comedian, DeeOne, has urged the Federal Government to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the financial operations of all Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operating in the country, alleging that some are being used to fund criminal activities.
DeeOne made the call in a video shared on his Instagram page on Wednesday, where he raised concerns over what he described as the growing abuse of NGOs for unlawful purposes.
According to the comedian, while many NGOs are genuinely committed to humanitarian causes, a significant number have allegedly become channels for financing terrorism, kidnapping, human trafficking and other criminal acts across the country.
Addressing the government directly, DeeOne called for urgent scrutiny of NGO bank accounts and sources of funding. He argued that weak oversight has allowed some individuals to exploit the system under the guise of charity and humanitarian service.
“Federal Government of Nigeria, please investigate all NGO accounts in the country. A lot of them are being used to sponsor terrorism, kidnappers, child trafficking and even human harvesting,” DeeOne said in the video. “There are too many things happening under the name of NGOs that Nigerians don’t know about.”
The comedian further lamented what he described as a disturbing trend where individuals establish NGOs shortly after participating in rescue missions or social interventions, only to later amass wealth in questionable ways.
While acknowledging that making money is not inherently wrong, DeeOne stressed that it must be done legitimately and not at the expense of innocent lives.
“In Nigeria today, if somebody rescues someone, the next thing is that they open an NGO, and before you know it, they become multimillionaires,” he stated. “We are not saying you should not make money, but it has to be legit, not at the expense of people’s lives.”
DeeOne’s comments come amid ongoing national conversations about transparency, accountability and security, especially as Nigeria continues to battle insurgency, kidnapping and human trafficking in different parts of the country.
Over the years, concerns have been raised by security experts and civil society groups over the misuse of donor funds and the lack of strict regulatory frameworks governing some NGOs.
Although DeeOne did not mention any specific organization, his remarks have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with some Nigerians supporting his call for tighter regulation, while others cautioned against painting all NGOs with the same brush.
Several commentators emphasized that many NGOs play vital roles in humanitarian relief, education, healthcare and social development, particularly in underserved communities.
Despite the mixed reactions, the comedian insisted that a thorough investigation would help separate genuine humanitarian organizations from those allegedly exploiting the system for criminal gains.
He urged authorities to strengthen monitoring mechanisms to ensure that NGOs operate strictly within the law and for their stated purposes.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government has not officially responded to DeeOne’s call. However, the issue continues to generate debate, adding to ongoing discussions about national security, financial transparency and the regulation of non-governmental organizations in Nigeria.
