Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has revealed the challenges she faced after giving birth to her son, including initial disappointment over the child’s gender and the impact on her career.

In a recent interview with YouTuber Korty EO, Savage opened up about her feelings when she learned she was having a boy, admitting that she had always hoped for a girl.

The singer recalled that she struggled to bond with her son during the first two years of his life. “Honestly, I didn’t bond with my son for the first year or two.

I always wanted a girl. They told me it was a boy, and I started crying,” she said. Savage explained that the transition into motherhood was difficult both emotionally and physically, as she dealt with postpartum changes to her body and public scrutiny.

The musician also revealed that she lost a brand endorsement at the time due to the way childbirth affected her looks. “So, when he came he was always crying and my body didn’t snap back.

I looked horrible. I was supposed to do a campaign with Pepsi at the time and they turned me away. And I just thought this boy has destroyed me,” she said.

Despite the initial difficulties, Savage said she is now grateful for her son, describing him as her best friend. “But now, he is my best friend,” she added, highlighting how their bond has grown over the years.

Tiwa Savage also shared the lessons she hopes to impart to her son, particularly regarding respect and treatment of women.

“I always tell him, you mum suffered oo, make sure you treat any girl like a queen. It is very important for me to raise him as a good man. He is going to make mistakes, he is not perfect. But at the core of him, I want him to be kind,” she explained.

Savage welcomed her son, Jamil Balogun, in July 2015 with her then-husband Tunji Balogun, and he celebrated his 10th birthday in July 2025.

Her candid reflections provide insight into the personal challenges and triumphs of balancing a high-profile career with motherhood.

The singer’s story resonates with many working mothers who struggle with societal expectations and the pressures of maintaining their professional image while raising children.

Tiwa’s honesty about her journey emphasizes that motherhood is not always immediately joyful, but with time, patience, and love, it can bring deep fulfillment and lasting bonds
