Veteran Nigerian musician Seyi Sodimu has weighed in on the influence of the so-called Afrobeats Big 3 – Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy stating that each wields a different type of influence in the entertainment industry and beyond.
Speaking on the What I Know podcast hosted by Korty EO alongside Shaffy Bello, the “Love Me Jeje” crooner shared his perspective on how the trio’s impact extends differently across music, culture, and public opinion.
He noted that while Wizkid has a unique influence, Burna Boy’s influence is primarily musical, and Davido’s reach goes beyond music, extending into broader societal influence.
Sodimu claimed that Davido’s influence is so far-reaching that he could potentially win a governorship election, highlighting his ability to connect with fans and the public in ways that transcend his music.
“The Big 3, each one is doing it for different reasons. Burna Boy has conquered the stage. And he is good. Wizkid is special. And Davido surpasses music,” Sodimu said.
He added, “What do I mean by that? If Davido ran for governor today, he would win. But I don’t think Burna Boy could win as a governor.”
According to Sodimu, Davido’s influence combines popularity, social reach, and personal branding, which could translate into political capital if he chose to pursue a role in public office.
This is not the first time public figures have tipped Davido for a political future. Last year, former Nigerian lawmaker Senator Ben Maurice Bruce suggested that Davido might one day become the governor of Osun State.
The speculation gains added context given that Davido’s uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke, currently holds the governorship position in Osun.
Sodimu’s comments also reaffirm the distinct paths and strengths of each member of the Afrobeats Big 3. While Burna Boy has dominated global stages and earned acclaim for his musical prowess, his influence remains largely confined to entertainment and culture.
Wizkid, on the other hand, is described as “special,” owing to his unique style, consistent innovation, and ability to inspire both fans and younger artists.
The discussion on the What I Know podcast sparked reactions from fans who debated the likelihood of musicians transitioning successfully into politics.
While some applauded Sodimu’s assessment of Davido’s popularity and influence, others argued that celebrity status does not automatically translate into political leadership.
Sodimu’s insights shed light on the evolving role of musicians in society, where influence is no longer limited to entertainment alone.
With social media and global recognition, figures like Davido have the capacity to impact public opinion, shape culture, and potentially extend their influence into governance and leadership roles.
As Afrobeats continues to dominate international music charts, discussions around the broader influence of its leading figures underscore how cultural icons in Nigeria are increasingly seen as more than entertainers—they are trendsetters, influencers, and potentially, future leaders.
