Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has stirred widespread reactions online following a deeply personal visit to his parents’ graveside, a moment he chose to share with his fans and followers.
The award-winning actor took to his Instagram page to post a video capturing himself alongside his two sons as they paid a visit to the final resting place of his late parents. According to Kanayo, the visit was not a casual one but a long-standing tradition he observes whenever he returns to his hometown.
In the emotional caption accompanying the video, the Nollywood icon explained that he always makes it a point to visit his parents’ graves to offer prayers for the peaceful repose of their souls. On this particular trip, however, he decided to bring his sons along so they could witness and understand the importance of honoring one’s roots and ancestry.
“Whenever I visit my place of birth, I always visit my parents’ grave site to offer prayers for the repose of their souls. On this visit, I took my Sons to observe the tradition. Hopefully, they will do the same for me. Ya gazie,” he wrote.
The post immediately sparked conversations across social media, drawing both praise and criticism from fans, colleagues, and observers.
While many applauded Kanayo for instilling cultural values and respect for tradition in his children, others strongly opposed the act, citing religious beliefs.
Actor Leo Edochie was among those who praised him, commenting, “You’re raising them well, God bless you.”
Another fan, lbs_619, wrote, “I like the way you teach your children traditions. God bless you, sir,” while chijiok01 added, “Our tradition, our heritage. Keep it up, sir.”
However, not everyone shared the same sentiment. A critic, goldenharvestacresltd, disagreed, stating, “This is a bad practice.
The dead have nothing to do with the living. You can’t pray to dead people.”
Despite the controversy, many continued to support the actor’s parenting style.
One gbaralesuzor01 simply wrote, “I love how you raise your boys.”
Kanayo KANAYO’s post once again highlights the ongoing conversation between culture, tradition, and modern religious beliefs, a topic that continues to divide opinions in Nigeria and beyond.
