Fresh tension has emerged in the ongoing controversy involving Senator Ned Nwoko and his wife, Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, following the actress’ recent release of a negative drug test result. The lawmaker has openly challenged the implication that the test confirms recovery, insisting that temporary abstinence should not be mistaken for genuine healing or accountability.
In a statement issued on Thursday via his verified X account and signed by his media team, Nwoko maintained that matters relating to substance use, rehabilitation and responsibility cannot be resolved through social media announcements or isolated medical tests. According to him, meaningful recovery requires long-term commitment, professional care and honest self-assessment.
“Temporary abstinence does not erase the underlying challenges that brought this situation to light. Recovery and accountability are not matters for social media posts or public engagement; they require sustained effort, honesty, and a genuine engagement with professional support,” the statement read.
The senator further questioned the credibility, timing and context of the drug test Daniels recently shared online, especially when compared with earlier assessments reportedly conducted at recognised medical institutions. He claimed that previous evaluations had already established evidence of substance use.
He stated that those findings were obtained from “two independent, reputable centres in Nigeria and South Africa,” stressing that the reports were professionally prepared and could withstand legal scrutiny.
“These reports were professionally compiled, formally documented, and will be presented and defended in court, and the centres involved will be subpoenaed to testify to their findings,” the statement added.
Nwoko also warned against using a later negative test result to discredit earlier medical conclusions, describing such a move as misleading.
“Presenting a later negative result as proof that no prior use occurred is misleading and disingenuous. At best, it reflects abstinence over a period of time. It does not invalidate earlier medical reports, nor does it negate what necessitated intervention in the first place.”
His comments followed Daniels’ public declaration that she had voluntarily undergone a comprehensive drug screening which, according to her, confirmed she was free of illegal substances. In an emotional video shared across her social media platforms, the actress rejected claims that she was a drug addict and vowed to take legal action against individuals spreading such allegations. She explained that taking the test was necessary to protect her reputation and reassure her children.
Daniels also acknowledged limited past use of ecstasy, commonly referred to as Molly, but denied abusing harder substances. Nwoko, however, dismissed any attempt to downplay the significance of Molly, insisting that the substance remains dangerous regardless of how casually it is discussed.
“Regardless of how casually it is referenced or repackaged in language, it is a drug. Renaming it does not alter its chemical composition, its risks, or its impact on judgment and stability,” the statement said.
The senator further emphasised that recovery cannot be defined by brief periods of abstinence, warning against equating short-term improvement with lasting healing.
“Moreover, temporary abstinence, whether for weeks or months, does not address the underlying issues that brought this situation to where it is today. Healing is not episodic, and accountability is not performative.”
According to the statement, Nwoko revealed that he had made several private attempts, long before the issue became public, to help Daniels access rehabilitation and structured therapy. He claimed those efforts failed due to what he described as denial.
On the sensitive issue of child custody, the lawmaker referenced a court ruling which, according to him, granted him custody of the children while dismissing allegations of human rights abuse previously raised against him.
“When the court gave judgment in favour of Senator Ned having custody, and dismissed all unsubstantiated human rights abuse claims brought forward last year, the court order stated that Regina should go for supervised therapy with evidence of same,” the statement noted.
He added that the matter was handled discreetly, without turning it into a public spectacle.
“We did not make it a time for public show. Senator Ned gave Regina a window to quietly seek the needed help. He acted discreetly, keeping matters out of the media while encouraging access to professional care so she could maintain a meaningful relationship with her children.”
The statement also challenged the idea that a single drug test could outweigh previous evaluations, stressing that consistency and independent verification are key.
“A single test, taken at a time of one’s choosing, does not outweigh documented assessments conducted independently and professionally,” it stated, adding that an independent, court-appointed laboratory could ultimately resolve the dispute using “reality supported by relevant, credible and admissible evidence.”
The controversy traces back to October 2025, when Daniels publicly accused the senator of domestic violence and coercion amid reports of marital strain. Nwoko denied the allegations, attributing the conflict to what he described as Daniels’ struggle with substance use. His camp later referenced leaked medical records from an Abuja hospital allegedly indicating positive results for cocaine, marijuana, morphine and opiates.
Although the hospital later disowned the leaked documents, describing them as unauthorised, Nwoko’s team has continued to insist that the records are authentic.
Nwoko and Daniels, who married in 2019, share two children. Their marriage has long attracted public attention, largely due to the significant age difference between them, a factor that has continued to fuel debate as their personal issues play out in the public space.
