Canadian authorities deported 366 Nigerian nationals between January and October 2025, while another 974 Nigerians are still awaiting removal, according to recent data released by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Figures obtained from the CBSA’s Removals Program and updated on November 25, 2025, show that Nigeria ranks among countries with notable deportation figures during the period under review.

Individuals who have already been deported completed all legal requirements before their removal. Those classified under “removal in progress” currently have enforceable removal orders but remain in Canada due to unresolved legal proceedings or logistical challenges.

A review of past records shows that deportations of Nigerians from Canada have varied over the years. In 2019, 339 Nigerians were removed, followed by 302 in 2020, 242 in 2021, and 199 in 2022. Nigeria did not feature prominently among top deported nationalities in 2023 and 2024 but returned to the list in 2025 with 366 removals.

The rise in deportations coincides with stricter immigration enforcement, as Canada now removes close to 400 foreign nationals weekly—the highest pace recorded in more than ten years. During the 2024–2025 fiscal year, approximately 18,000 people were deported from the country.

Canadian law mandates the CBSA to remove any foreign national with a valid removal order. Grounds for deportation may include immigration violations, criminal offences, security-related issues, or providing false information.

Authorities say the tougher enforcement forms part of efforts to meet revised immigration targets and ease mounting pressure on housing, employment, and border security. To support these actions, the government has increased funding for removal operations and border control initiatives.
