Nigerian social media was thrown into fresh controversy after outspoken crypto entrepreneur Linus Williams Ifejika, popularly known as Blord, unveiled a new app called RATEL, a move many see as deliberately stirring old tensions rather than simply launching a tech product.
RATEL is a multifunctional app designed to simplify everyday transactions for users across Africa. With the platform, users can purchase airtime and mobile data, pay electricity and utility bills, and manage other basic digital services from one place. Blord describes the app as a step toward financial convenience and digital inclusion, positioning it as a lifestyle solution rather than just another fintech product.
What has truly stirred conversations online, however, is the inspiration behind the name. Blord openly admitted that “RATEL” was named after the Ratels, the fiercely loyal supporters of social media activist and influencer VeryDarkMan (VDM), whose real name is Martins Vincent Otse. This move is widely seen as a bold and provocative nod to the long-running feud between the two men.
The clash between Blord and VDM dates back over a year, beginning with allegations and counter-allegations surrounding fake iPhones and questionable business practices. VeryDarkMan had repeatedly called out Blord online, questioning the legitimacy of some of his ventures and presenting himself as a voice of accountability. Blord, on the other hand, dismissed the claims, accused VDM of clout-chasing, and responded with displays of wealth, legal threats, and online theatrics. Their back-and-forth quickly evolved into one of Nigeria’s most talked-about online rivalries, spawning countless memes, debates, and divided fanbases.
In a flashy promotional video released on Sunday, Blord projected that RATEL could generate up to ₦500 million in revenue by mid-2026. He also pledged that 50 percent of the app’s earnings would be donated to charity, a promise that has drawn both praise and skepticism from Nigerians online.
Many observers believe Blord has cleverly transformed controversy into marketing fuel, turning a bitter rivalry into brand visibility. While critics question his motives, supporters applaud his ability to convert online drama into business momentum. One thing is certain: with RATEL, Blord has once again proven that in Nigeria’s digital age, attention, conflict, and commerce often go hand in hand.
