Funke Akindele’s Behind the Scenes has maintained its dominance at the Nigerian box office, topping the charts once again despite the expected slowdown that followed the end of the festive holiday season.

The film anchored the January market, proving that strong December releases continue to sustain momentum into the new year.

According to the latest data from NGA Box Office, cinemas experienced a noticeable drop in revenue last weekend as holiday traffic eased.

However, overall performance remains robust, driven largely by holdover titles that continue to attract audiences. “I think it went really okay,” NGA Box Office said in its weekly commentary, noting that the decline was anticipated following the conclusion of holiday celebrations.

Early January figures have already surpassed last year’s performance. Box office revenue currently stands at ₦1.6 billion, compared to ₦1.1 billion recorded at the same point in 2025, representing a significant 45–46 per cent increase.

Admissions have also risen sharply, with over 260,000 tickets sold, up from 210,000 during the same period last year. NGA Box Office described the market as “very healthy,” crediting the resilience to strong films carrying over from December.

Leading the pack for the fifth consecutive week is Behind the Scenes, which grossed ₦167.4 million from 27,969 admissions during the weekend.

The film’s cumulative box office has now reached ₦2.103 billion, marking a historic achievement. NGA Box Office noted that the title dropped by just 21 per cent week-on-week, a performance described as “very fair and decent” for a blockbuster at this stage of its run.

With this milestone, Behind the Scenes has become the first film in West Africa to cross the ₦2 billion mark unadjusted for inflation.

From an admissions standpoint, the film is already climbing the all-time rankings and is expected to surpass 400,000 admissions in the coming weeks, further cementing its place in Nigerian box office history.

Toyin Abraham’s Oversabi Aunty held firmly in second place, earning ₦79.9 million in its fourth week. Its total gross now stands at ₦863.6 million, placing it on course to reach the ₦900 million mark. NGA Box Office expressed confidence in the film’s continued performance throughout January, citing its steady audience appeal.

James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash also delivered a solid showing in its fourth week, grossing ₦39.6 million to push its lifetime total to ₦547.5 million.

The film recorded a moderate 48 per cent drop, which NGA Box Office described as a strong hold for an international release in the current market.

Among new and lower-ranked titles, Greenland 2: Migration debuted with ₦10 million, while Niyi Akinmolayan’s Colours of Fire and Anaconda rounded out the top six with ₦8.4 million and ₦7.1 million respectively.

Overall, the week’s performance reflects a box office still anchored by December releases, setting a confident and resilient tone for the year ahead.
