Nigerian singer Chike has shared a deeply personal account of the experiences that influenced his relationship with faith, worship spaces, and traditional church settings. Reflecting on events from several years ago, the acclaimed vocalist explained that an unexpectedly awkward encounter during a church visit triggered his decision to stop attending services altogether — even though his belief in God remains intact.
Chike recounted that during one particular visit, he immediately felt unsettled upon recognizing the woman leading praise and worship. According to him, they had a past connection that instantly brought back uncomfortable memories. The situation, he said, made it almost impossible to focus on the service.
In his words, “The chick that was leading the praise and worship, we had history. And I couldn’t… I was having flashbacks. And she was kabashing, and I’m like… who’s that.”
He explained that the emotional tension and distraction became overwhelming, leaving him unable to remain in that environment. After only a week of attending the church, he quietly stepped away, deciding that the atmosphere was not conducive for him. Importantly, he clarified that this decision had nothing to do with abandoning his faith or rejecting God.
Chike further emphasized that he has always believed in divine guidance. He narrated a defining moment early in his career, long before fame and recognition came. At the time, he lived in Primewater Gardens with his then-girlfriend and found himself struggling with uncertainty about the future. In that vulnerable moment, he turned to prayer, earnestly asking God for strength and direction.
“Not because I don’t believe in God, because I do,” he noted. “I just said a prayer. I just said, God, I don’t have anybody. I don’t have anything. Just help me.”
That quiet prayer marked a turning point for him, reinforcing a personal understanding of faith that did not depend solely on church attendance.
Chike also reflected on another challenging phase of his life — a confusing period shortly after releasing his debut album. He revealed that he accidentally consumed an extremely potent edible, unaware of its strength. The experience left him disoriented for several days. “Three, four days into the release of my album, I didn’t even know where I was,” he shared, describing how surreal the moment felt during what should have been a celebratory time.
Despite these moments and his eventual withdrawal from church services, Chike stressed that his spiritual convictions remain firm. What has changed, he explained, is simply the structure through which he practices his faith. Traditional church systems, he admitted, do not align with his lifestyle or personal comfort.
“Church is not for me. There are things that I like, that I would not be able to do,” he said, noting that he prefers a more personal, less structured expression of spirituality. To him, what matters most — whether in leadership, daily living, or public influence — is the consistent choice to treat others with fairness and kindness. “You just need to do right. By the people. By the people. By the people.”
Chike concluded by suggesting that living a good life transcends labels or appearances. While he identifies as a Christian, he believes the core of faith lies in integrity and compassion rather than strict adherence to outward expressions of religiosity.
